Hey guys!! I was just wondering if anyone out there has taken the Wilton Fondant & Gum Paste course yet. If you have, what do you think about it? Do you learn a lot of new things & is it very expensive overall? If it is kind of pricey, do you think it's worth it?

I am a wmi and I just received my pack of information on the Wilton Fondant and Gumpaste course. I do not know what they are going to charge for the kit my guess is $25 you get a lot of stuff in the kit. You will also need 1 pkg of gumpaste and probably a 5lb box of fondant. 1 week you cover a cake with fondant and the final week you decorate a final cake with the stuff that you learned in class.

Tuesday is my 2nd class. It is really interesting and informative, at least for a beginner like me that has never worked with fondant before. Besides the kit, I had to buy a whole bunch of stuff I didn't have b/c I never needed for BC. It's getting pricey and I have only had 1 class. You need the large and small rolling pins, fondant, piping gel, the cutter thingy to cut the fondant, a 12" silver foiled board, some other stuff I don't recal now. Anyway, if you sign up, DO get the list of supplies ahead of time. I never got one and on the first day had no supplies, just the kit I had bought previously. Had to run and get all the stuff. Luckily the instructor gave me 40% off coupons. Don't get me wrong, I guess with any class its going to get expensive, but if you enjoy it, its worth it.

I teach at a Michael's and the course was free this month with the purchase of the kit, so I think it's a great deal. I would have liked to see more flowers in the lesson plan, as expressed by some students, so I'm supplementing the material.

Your biggest expenses are going to be the fondant and gumpaste, so it's not too bad.

Good luck!

You get a lot of stuff in the kit... so that is worth it more so if you have a 40% off coupon that they send out in the mail for Michaels... or AC Moore.

If you are a beginner the class is great... if you have worked with Fondant before some parts of it are a bit of a waste. I'm fairly new, and the only things I really learned in the class were making the carnation flowers and the fantasy flower, but those plus the fun of meeting new people made the class woth it to me.

I personally wish Wilton would come out with an advanced class for just gumpaste flowers.

Really the classes are about having fun though, so go and enjoy!

Thanks for the info!! I know a lot of money can be spent on fondant & gumpaste, depending on how much you use. I was wondering too about the extra supplies that are needed. I do agree though that if you enjoy it, then it's worth it!

Boy, I wish my instructor would do the same. Any books/materials you suggest? I was hoping to learn to do the roses.

Thanks,
Naty

Can anyone tell me what comes in the kit? I already have a lot of fondant and gumpaste tools and don't want to duplicate them. TIA

The gumpaste roses are taught in course 3, so I'm adding the calla lilies. I wish they would have just focused on flowers instead of reviewing things. I hate to say it, but I feel that they were trying to sell their toys and didn't focus enough on content. thumbsdown.gif

The kit includes...

RIBBON CUTTER
EMBOSSER
DUSTING POUCH
DIFFERENT CUTTERS

I think I'm missing something from my impromptu list.....

This is considered course 4? Sorry but which course 3? I took course 3 and I don't remember them teaching me gumpaste (I wish they had). It was all BC. Mind you this was 4 years ago. Maybe things have changed. Maybe I should take course 3 again...would love to learn roses!!!

I took course 3 a few months ago and there were no gumpaste roses. If I already have the above mentioned items I wouldn't need to purchase the kit?

Naty,

Course 3 is covering cakes in fondant, some royal icing flowers, and the gumpaste rose.

The gumpaste course is not a course 4. I just think they should have taken some time and come up with a course that focuses directly on gumpaste.

I hope they take any feedback they receive from the class to heart and really re-vamp it a bit. That's just from my own personal experience with the class, though.

Thanks Angie. My instructor said its course 4. I think she's wrong. Go figure! I agree with learning more flowers, especially with the gumpaste. I wish I would of learned that as well. icon_sad.gif

I totally agree with Angelas2babies... I also teach the course at Michaels, and thank goodness my manager basically leaves me alone. I have had students that are really advanced and been working on their skills for a while, so I've totally supplemented the materials. I still make sure that I go over and teach what is in the book, but the really new things honestly take only one real lesson to really go over. I have been dedicating one of the four lessons to an assortment of flowers from the Wilton gumpaste book, as well as giving the students the option to create a more interesting final cake. I bring in several designs and lessons to choose from and let the students vote. This month we decided on a purse cake.

Hopefully Wilton will catch on to the fact that this class just isn't working for the die hard fanatics that are the most interested in taking it!!

We WMI's are reminded in our newsletters that the new course is in no way course 4 because if you have taken course 1 you may take the fondant/gumpaste course. I too have suplimented my class with adding the calla lilly as another flower.

Hi Everyone,
Just finished the Wilton Fondant/Gumpaste class. Was a bit disappointed. I had taken the Wilton 1-3 Classes already and had most of the things in the kit so I did not purchase it and was fine. Shared a few cutters with others. We learned the carnation, Fantasy Flower (very pretty BTW) how to cover a cake board with fondant borders and some other simple techniques. I was ready for more advanced flowers and more difficult techniques but have just decided to try and teach myself with books. I purchased the Wilton Gumpaste cutters and have reviewed the book. With some practice I think I'll be able to do orchids, lilies, daffodils, etc. If you've already taken the first 3 Wilton classes I don't think you'll be missing much by not taking the Fondant/Gumpaste class. Yes, I agree that Wilton should offer a more advanced class after all we've purchased a whole lot of their merchandise!!!

I'm so glad you asked this question b/c I was really interested in the reviews of the class too. The one thing I saw in the kit that I would LOVE an instruction manual on or something was that stupid ribbon roller. I don't know how you're supposed to use it - and I'm SOOOO tired of cake stuff that doesn't have any instructions with it - why not?? How is anyone supposed to just magically know how to use your product? Why not include a few basic instructions for others so they will buy your product, use it, and be happy and a repeat customer? (sorry for the little vent there - that's against all cake products by the way not just Wilton's). Anyway so do you all feel it was a good class or that you could basically teach most of it to yourself from learning stuff here on CC?

I just took class 3 and we made roses from fondant, we did mix a little gum tex into the fondant to stiffen it up. I bought the gumpaste flower kit and the instructions for the rose is totally diffrent than the course 3 rose.
