Need Some Airbrush Help/ Advise.....

I just did my first cake using my new airbrush. I started to get the hang of it by the end, but I do have a couple a questions I could use some advise on. If you look at the pic below you will see that the monkey is very dark brown. I wanted a medium and ordered brown ink. I was wondering how you adjust colors or what color you would suggest to get a better medium brown. Also I over shot on areas around his face. One question is can you remove that with anything? The other is is just practice to get a nice clean line or is there a trick to it.
Sorry for all the questions but any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks Susan
k hun, your cakes look great by the way!!!
here goes, if you want a lighter shade then you can dilute the colors with a little bit of water (like watercolor) or you can spray a lighter coat of the particular color.
As for the detail work, you'll always get a little bit of overspray with airbrushing. The only way to avoid that altogether is to use a mask (something to cover the areas that you don't want colored.) Or with a little practice and a very light pull on the trigger, you can get finer lines. Just barely draw back the trigger and get as close as possible without blasting holes to your support (thing you are painting). Test it first on a piece of paper or paper towel to see just how much you have to pull back the trigger.
Thanks Chaptlps! For the compliment and the advise. I wasn't sure how to dilute it properly. Seems pretty easy but its always good to ask when unsure. I have already gotten another order for one similar to this so I will have to try your tips out and see if I can improve it. ALso ONe last question. Do you use anything in particular to mask with. I tried to mask but wasn't real succuessful
Thanks again
Susan
hmmm, I usually don't mask and just take the overspray as part of my designs. but you could use a piece of parchment or printer paper and cut it to the desired shape and somehow attach it to the item. I saw Duff on Ace of Cakes using the blue painters tape. I don't know if that'll work on such a small area though. You might try it and see if you could cut a piece of the blue painters tape into the shape you want and see if that works.
Ok, good Idea. I was wondering if that was ok to do. I might have to give it a try until I get better with the gun.
Thanks again for all your help.
Susan
