Co worker/friend asked me to do her sons bday cake, no problem.

I made a cowboyhat cake, made the brim about 6 days ahead and all was good,......until I put it together. sighhh.... its been raining and the hat brim still hadn't dried(6 days!)
then it drooped and split in a couple of places. Went ahead and did it up on display n such as best I could, but I was not happy with it.

I really like her and told her ahead of time that I would only chg her $20.oo for it . she doesnt make much $$$.

I told her about the weather affecting the brim @ work this AM before hand and she seems fine but it just pains me that she has seen me do 2 GREAT hat cakes. I was just not happy with the way it turned out. I so wanted it to be good.

Why do I feel so blehhh?

I have found that in a pinch, you can use candy melts or melted "almond bark" as "glue" for stubborn fondant. Especially if the fondant pieces are cold, the candy melts will bond almost immediately.

That's definitely Texas weather for you! It has been rainy, sunny, hot and cold at my house, all in the last 48 hrs!

Some things are simply out of our control, and you just have to learn to do the best you can with what you are given.

Sorry about the bad luck with this cake! We've all been there...things will go perfectly next time!

Actually I love using melted almond bark.... you may have even been able to use the old fondant or some cardboard as a shape and then use the candy to make a last minute emergency brim...it holds up pretty good. I used to use melted candy for all sorts of stuff before I learned about fondant. icon_lol.gif

Hi Terry,

That's always the case...the cake that we really want to do always seem to give us problems icon_cry.gif

Don't be so hard on yourself, your friend completely understand. Maybe you could do her a smaller version when the weather permits icon_wink.gif

At least it's for someone that's a friend and will understand! If you'd had another type of customer paying a lot of money, it would've been a real stresser for you. That does stink though. I know what you're feeling. You want to do an awesome job, even though you're probably not making a penny. I always feel like if my cake doesn't turn out perfect, the recipient will think I hurried through it and didn't take my time. Any cake decorator knows it's about so much more than that. What are you going to do? You did your best. Just be sure to tell her that the rain made the cake challenging to do. I'm sure she'll love it despite it's imperfections. : )

I love your cowboy hat cakes! Some day I'll get up the nerve to try one!
