hate to ask a dumb question, but...what do you use to thin down royal icing so that it can be used like colorflow?

I used water (just a little) to thin mine down and it seemed to work just fine. Just can't thin it too much or it won't harden right. I read that if you draw a knife blade through it and it takes a slow count to 10 to come together, then it's good to go.
