I am making a cake that is going to have fondant sculpted heads on top. So far everything is going great, but I am having a bit of trouble with hair. I have one that has a beard and one that just has hair. I have tried using the decorator tip for grass and hair, but not getting the effect I want. Also, I want the cake to be as realistic as I can. so i don't want to use something like licorice strands for hair. Any suggestions?

I've not tried to do hair with fondant, so I'd be curious to find out too.

The best I could come up with is a clay gun. You can try that and see if it works.

I've never done that but would a garlic press work?

A garlic press might work, but the problem is the size. The heads are about 4 inches in height and about 3 inches in width, so the beard is pretty small. The heads aren't going to be edible because there is foam in the center, so i was thinking maybe i could get a bit of sandpaper or use a toothpick and rough it up a bit then paint the beard on.

You could use RI for the hair / beard

why don't you try a playdough kit. they're really cheap only a couple of bucks at a discount store, and come with a tube dude that you press the playdough through to make his "hair grow".
My sons set came with a big comb, and play scissors too. he just loves squeezing the playdough out, they look like worms!!

For the hair and the beard just glue a piece of fondant where you want it, in the shape you want, and then "sculpt" the hair with a toothpick or hat pin. This is very easy and quick. With the tools, you can blend the fondant onto the head for a more natural look.

A garlic press works just great or if you had a pasta machine that would work as well as a clay gun or sugarpaste gun. If you use the above method a pizza cutter would work better than a toothpick. Thats my 2 bobs worth.
