For those who use them... any hints or tips that would be good to know??

I will be doing a 5 tier wedding cake soon and plan on using the jacks (don't care for the dowel experience .....measure twice, cut once still didn't work for me icon_redface.gif ). Any tidbits of info anyone has to share would be greatly appreciated!! thumbs_up.gif TIA

I hate cake jacks! I threw them all in a box and have not used them since! I dowel with wood now for every cake!

I've never tried cake jacks before, but I know your frustration with wooden dowels. I had such a hard time cutting them! But I've been experimenting with large straws and they are working out great. They are super easy to cut and they are super cheap as well. I'm not sure how sturdy they are as I haven't stacked a three tier cake with them but I've done a two tier and they worked out beautifully. Just thought I'd shareicon_smile.gif

plastic dowels with adjustable screws in one end. You adjust the length by adjusting the screw. Found them on Sugarcraft website as recommended by a fellow CCer.

moydear77....care to elaborate on why you don't like the jacks??? I really want to have an idea of what can go wrong as well as right icon_confused.gif I will be doweling down thru all tiers also and if I have to I guess I can do the support dowels as well icon_sad.gif

Well when you cut a dowel all the same length you are sure that the cake will be level. Jacks screw to the level of the icing so as not to show. Also the jacks I have are slippery so you need to secure with a dap of icing. They are a pain to get back from people and a expense to just have them get lost. Mine are also a pain to clean and I am not fond of reusing things that go inside the cake that I truly don't know are completely clean.
