I'm making a mickey mouse cake for my son's b-day and am wondering if i can make it a double layer? Is this possible with the character pans?

I've never tried that.

It might be easier to put Mickey on top of a sheet cake so you have a good flat surface for stacking. I guess you could cut out the sheet cake if you don't want the extra cake showing.

I have done 2 layer with character cake pans. I just put BC in between. I always find that one layer is too thin for my family icon_smile.gif

Do you level the top of the bottom layer?

Has anyone ever tried doing a character cake without doing the star fill in... I want to try and get a smooth finish. I hate sitting there and filling it in with all those stars!

I trim it just a little. Just enough to make it flat. I have never tried icing it w/o the stars. Let me know how it turns out!!

You can, but its probably just as much of a pain as the stars! haha....but it does give a neat look.

I use the Wilton train pan to do a 3D Thomas and I smooth the icing instead of using stars. It does take just as much if not more time, but at least your hand doesn't cramp! I fill it in with a round tip, spread it as flat as possible with a small spatula, let it crust, and then use my finger or a Viva towel to smooth it the rest of the way.
