My husband may be transferred this summer to Northeast Iowa. I'm currently in Ohio, and am wondering if anyone can tell me about the laws in Iowa regarding home-based business, bakeries, etc. Thanks!

I don't know any of the particular laws but I do know that you can do it using your own kitchen.

You can do it from your home as long as it's considered a non-potentially hazardous bakery product. Which is anything that does not require refrigeration after preparation. You'll have to be licensed as a home food establishment to sell the potentially hazardous bakery product.

I'm originally from Cedar Falls Iowa and then lived a short stint in Des Moines a couple years back! Shouldn't be a big culture shock coming from Ohio! LOL

Ditto, but check with your county and if you are living in a city then your city health department also.

I found out that as long as I don't want to advertise I can sell out of my home. If I want to advertise then I need to be licensed. However with my city I live in even if I am not licensed I can not have customers picking up. I am the only one that can take product off of my property.

For reference I live in East Central Iowa.

Also if you are moving to the North east I am jealous. You will be near KitchenKrafts. They are primarily a web and catalog based company, but have found out that you can visit their warehouse (it is on a weekend trip list of mine)

I hope I have helped to answer some of your questions if you have more just ask!

My husband is a professor of music and has applied for a position at Luther College, which is in Decorah, Iowa. I'm from Ohio, and live in the Columbus area, which is the capitol city. I'm thinking Decorah looks a lot smaller, but it does look like a lovely town from what I've seen (on the internet).

I believe it is in Waukon. If you go to their website you can find the address. Make sure you call and find out their hours though. I don't know if they have an area that is open all the time.

If you go make sure you let us know how good it is =)

And, Welcome to CC. Glad to see more people from the midwest

I just moved from the Waukon area. KK is actually in the country, but I didn't have trouble finding it. You can go there, but there isn't really a retail store. I went in the side door and they were super nice and gathered my order together while I waited. I got my cake decorating stand there so I didn't have to pay shipping on that heavy thing! They gave me all of their catalogs too, so if you go to their website you can send for a catalog and be all ready when you go to shop icon_biggrin.gif I decorated at the Wal-mart in Decorah for awhile...I know...I know...but hey, I learned to use an airbrush there!!

I don't think I will be able to go anytime soon, but didn't realize we had anything in Iowa of that sort! Pretty cool!

For all the Iowans: Are you guys mostly home based or other?
There seems to be quite a few of us! icon_biggrin.gif

purplebutterfly

I am home based. Because of zoning I am not allowed to have customers come to my home so even for cake tastings and consults I go to them or we meet at the mall food court.

fosterscreations,
Wow! I saw your website! A lot of detailed information. I haven't a clue where to start. I thought maybe that cakeboss program to get started with. I'm not good with numbers. icon_cry.gif
