I have been asked to make a 1/4 sheet cake for a lady at work.
She is new, no one really know much about here. I want to do something that will knock their scoks off.
I wanted to do a round cake covered in roses with simple scroll work arround the sides, but they want the sheet cake. How boring! The thought of making enough roses for the top of a sheet cake makes want to cry.
Any suggestions?
You could make it will an oval area in the middle with her name or a message and put a nice bead border or small shell border around it and then cornelli lace the rest of the cake around the oval and then put a nice bunch of roses around one side of the oval. I have seen sheetcakes like this before and they always look so elegant.
Just an idea,
Heather
I think most of the time people automatically think sheet cake because they are "cheap grocery store-ized"(i think i just made up words) They default to sheet cake because that's what they see most of the time. Maybe tell them the size round cake you will make will feed the same number as a 1/4 sheet but will be much prettier. I love your idea!
I agree with dodibug. Tell them the round cake will have enough servings and that you want to present something different than sheet cake. If you are doing this for free then they should let you work your magic
Good luck!
hamie: You could make a sheet cake look pretty.
Maybe make it chocolate, covered in dark chocolate ganache or any dark chocolate frosting with a few deep red roses(or other color) placed on top or maybe some chocolate covered strawberries & use Heathermari's suggestion of the oval in the middle with her name

I'm not sure what your budget on this cake is, but maybe make it look like a present. Just do the 1/4 sheet cake either with a colored icing and a fondant bow or a dark chocolate with a white chocolate bow
what if you made the sheet cake as they wanted, (assuming they are paying?) And made a second one just for her, decorated the way you'd like to show people you can do? Even if it's jsut a 6" "personal" cake that she can take home. You'll also get a freind out of it, If you wanted another one.
I'd give them their sheet cake, but I'd put a small round tier on it. Then the guest of honor can bring the small (and beautifully decorated) round cake home. If they're paying for the sheet cake, I would just add a 6" round cake without additional charge and just chalk it up to advertising costs.
