I read the directions to make a gum paste shoe. My question is do you use the pre made gum paste or do you make your own. I have never actually worked with it before. Thanks in advance for your help.

I made one last week for the first time. I used the canned Wilton powder and colored it pink. I used ½ the recipe which turned out to be ½ the can. It was enough to make a shoe that was about 4" tall and 7" long. One of the problems I encountered is the heel seem to slump bulge and compress as it dried. I wondered if I needed to take more of the weight off the heel as it dried. I also needed to be more generous with the slurried gumpaste as glue. I didn't put enough stuffing in the toe as it dried and it collapsed on itself a little. I did not use the pattern available here and made my own template, so that could have contributed to my issues too. I also tried to use shimmer dust on it and that was a major error. I was in a hurry and did not start this project early enough to really do a good job. I should have done a few practice runs, but it was a practice cake so I guess that's okay. It was so bad I didn't post the pics but I probably will later. It is a candidate for an ugly cake award.

Next time, I would use a texture mat and luster, sparkle or pearl dust. I'd be sure the heel did not have any weight on it as it dried and I do some more experiments with color. I'd be better about stuffing the toe. I used crisco on the mat and rolling pin to keep the paste from sticking - thqat worked better than powdered sugar and was less messy.

I hope this helps.

I've used the premade gumpaste. It's quicker for me to have on hand.

I made my first last week using the premade Wilton gumpaste. Click here to see. That was easiest for me. It was a bear to tint, but overall not too bad. The hardest part for me to make was the heel. It seemed to start drying before I was finished shaping it.

I later used the gumpaste mixed with some MMF for another project and found that much easier ... the straight gumpaste dries really quickly, adding the MMF gives it a little more time.
