I just wanted your opinion. I have recently started to learn how to make gumpaste flowers. I've spent quite a bit of money (over $200) on supplies so far. Last night, before I place an order for around $100, (included in the $200 figure), my husband asked me why, what are the flowers for? That stumped me. I didn't have an answer. I haven't started a business (but would like to if I could find out from the State of Delaware what I have to do to be legal... doesn't anybody in the state govnt. know????!!!) and I don't really have a plan to use any of the flowers, or even know if I'll ever use them. I just like to "play" and learn new things. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a lot of free time, but I do enjoy spending some of it working with gumpaste. Am I nuts?

I agree, everyone needs a hobby. If my DH even LOOKS like he's going to say something, I remind him that I can always go bar hopping to keep myself occupied icon_cool.gif . He prefers my craft hobbies much better. I wonder why? icon_twisted.gif

Hobbies are expensive, but they give us such joy, don't they?

Girl, you're not crazy. Far from it. Think of all your friends. My ex-mil has thousands upon thousands of dollars in her dolls, and I spend plenty on cakes, as well as sewing, crocheting, and beanie bears! We all have our hobbies, and they cost us plenty. That's why Michael's and Hobby Lobby, and all those places do such a booming business.

I'm a stay at home mom and I think cake decorating is what keeps me sane. Hubby is very nice to buy me all of my supplies, (I just started in Jan. and have easily spent $500 so far!)He knows when I'm baking that he is on Daddy duty and it is my ONLY time for me. I'm sure you don't spend money frivolously on everything you do, and if it is something you really enjoy you are entitled to it thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

I so know exactly what you are talking about. I took a class a few months back on gumpaste flowers and spent a lot on it and on the supplies but I just love doing it. I live in a small rural town where people don't like to spend a lot on cakes and so I don't ever know if I will ever be able to use them, but I just love it so much. I'm a stay at home mom and it just gives me something to do on the side that is very rewarding. My dh gives me a hard time about it every once in awhile but usually when I explain to him how much I love it, he usually stops. But I do have to beg to buy anymore suppliesicon_smile.gif

foxymama521, you and I are in the same boat! That is my situation exactly. The ony "me" time I get is when I'm working on a cake and DH knows that he gets his Daddy time while I get my cake time. I'm also a SAHM. I started close to the same time you did as well and have spend about that same amount...weird! DH just got me KA for my birthday last week and I've made 2 cakes with it and I'm in love! How old are your kids. I have 2 girls, ages 4 and 19 months.

Thanks for the replies. I thought maybe I was being frivilous, and was crazy for spending time and money on something that might never be used. I do enjoy it a lot, and I don't normally spend much- I'm know in my family as getting really good bargains. You do have a point about how some people collect dolls or such as a hobby, I guess I collect gumpaste supplies and put them to work!
I also like the idea of Mommy time for you stay at home Mom's. I'd love to be a stay at home Mom, but even when I have kids we won't be able to swing it financially. Even so, I think I'll save some time to still work on my flowers after we have kids! It will be a nice sanity break!
Thanks everyone!

MavericksMommy, what I was making when I worked (we had one child at that time) was not enough to continue to work when I had our second child. I just would have been working to pay someone else to keep them! icon_sad.gif I may have had enough left to pay for some of the gas to get back and forth! I really love being a SAHM. I never dreamed I would be a Mom, much a less a SAHM!

As long as you're not going into credit card debt, why not? Like the other ladies said, it's no different than other hobbies where people collect things just because. How many men collect baseball cards or beer bottles, or people collect beenie babies (never did get that one)?

In DE, we can only have a home based cake/baking business if we have a seperate kitchen (can be a converted garage), and it has to be equipped with commercial equipment & stainless steel everything. No cabinets or traditional countertops, only stainless tables and shelving units. There also has to be a drain in the floor but I don't know what the floor material has to be. My Wilton instructor works for the Dept of Health & Public Safety, and this is what her boss told her. You'd have to call them to get the specific requirements, but it's quite an investment.

bluehen92,
I'm so sad that DE requires a separate kitchen. I don't have the kind of money for that. I've been searching everywhere to find out what I needed to do without any luck so thank you very much for posting it.
I'm thinking maybe I'll just stick to family, and if a friend or someone that heard about me through a friend wants to give me money for a cake I make, then I'll do it. But I won't advertise or anything, or consider it a business. I did that when I lived in Maryland- except it was for floral design. I did have a tax id number though so I could get stuff at the wholesaler. I just did freinds and family weddings.

In Delaware, if you contact the Health Systems Protection office of the Division of Public Health, they can help you. The number is 302-744-4546 and the gentleman who helped me was Mr. Ralph Matthews. He can tell you exactly what you need to be legal in Delaware and what your options are. After speaking to him, I realized it was easier to try to find a licensed kitchen to rent than to build/renovate my own.

If your DH ever questions the money you spend on cake supplies, just ask him if he's used every tool in the garage? Or every golf club in his bag? Typical men's hobbies can be much more expensive, and they don't hesitate to get all of the supplies they need- and then some! Have you ever seen him walk out of Sears with just one little screwdriver?

is it possible that if you sold the flowers as "decorative" items only -- not food for consumption-- you could make them without the need for another kitchen.

wouldn't they just be a "craft" item them? (artificial flowers)
