OK, I've got these two large rose tips: #124 and #127

What do I use for the base. For example I use the 12 to pipe the mound for the rose base to use a 103 or 104 rose. I'd like to try these two larger ones. What size tip to make the mound,.. are there two different ones?

I know this may be a silly question but I've not used these before and I wanted to check before I got a request for different size roses on one cake.

Thanks!!

- Paula

PS - Are there couplers for roses this large or just trim the bag to fit? Thx!!

Paula, what I have used to pipe the large rose base is just the icing bag with the couple inside...take off the ring and tip and squeeze a goodly amount..pull the bag straight up thereby creating the sharp point. Works for both larger sizes of rose tips.
Sorry, I didn't see the second part of your question. These large tips go directly into the bag...no coupler.

If you are familiar enough with the center coil of the rose, you can use that technique to make the base. Hold the bottom of the rose tip against the nail and spin it, making a tight coil. Then you can start your rose on top of that one. OR, as we do at work, use the rose tip and hold it with the entire tip facing down, and squeeze out a balloon of icing to make a ball, and then put your coil on top of that.

Good luck!!

I just learned in class that 127 is used for making ruffels. It was one of the tips in our kit. icon_biggrin.gif

Just a note of clarification: any of the rose tips can be used for roses or ruffles depending on the size needed for each. There are very few "single purpose" tips. One of our instructors challenged us to see how many designs could be made with a single tip...lovely borders made with a leaf tip..also, very interesting how just using varying pressure changes the design.
