I am making a cake for my grandparents 60th anniversary. I want it to be special since my granma is awesome. I am making a 3 tierd cake and wantined to put her favorite flowers on it. but i need help. I have never used gumpaste, only fondant. I don;t even know where to start. I am not sure what these flowers look like let alone how to go about making them. Her favorite flowers are viloets and lilacs. any help would be great.

To me Gumpaste is sort of similar to fondant, except that it dries much quicker. I use shortening when working with both so that doesn't change for me. I frequently mix the 2 50/50. There is a tiny Wilton's flower petal in the kit that you could use to make the violet or lilac blossoms with. You will need to group the lilac blossoms to make the bigger flower. If gumpaste scares you, you can make royal icing violets that look very pretty. The Course 2 Wilton book has instructions if you're not familar with how to do them.

I recently made a cake with lilac in my photos. I just made tiny BC flowers with number 101 tip, let them dry and then put them together on a cake. Oh, I first made kind of a dome in the shape of lilac on the cake with BC to make it look raised and then stuck flowers to it. Hope this helps. I can't make violets yet though.

If you have a small blossom cutter you can roll out lavender or purple gumpaste, or knead some Tylose powder into your fondant. Cut the flowers out, lay them on a double thick paper towel if you don't have a foam cel mat. Use the end of a small paintbrush or even a Q tip and press gently into the center of the flower to make it cup up on the edges. Make an oval of paste by just rolling in your hands, about 3" long and 1 1/2" wide. Lay the oval on the iced cake where you would want a cluster of flowers to go. If you don't have gum glue just lightly brush the oval of paste with a light coating of clear piping gel or clear corn syrup thinned with a tiny bit of water. Add the flowers all the way around the oval on the outside edge, then fill in with other flowers, overlapping them here and there. You may have to brush a bit of the "glue" onto the back of the flower to make it stick. For Lilacs I wouldn't bother making leaves, but if you want them to look like a cluster of Violets, make that oval paste into a ball then flatten the bottom with your fingers. Do the same thing with the piping gel or syrup, and arrange the flowers in the same way. Color a small piece of fondant with dark green color, roll out and if you don't have a large violet leaf cutter, use a small round cookie cutter, cut out two or three circles of green paste. Lay them on a double thick paper towel, make the veining or lines in the leaf with the dull side of a butter knife blade, just press lightly at the middle and draw the knife down to the bottom. Do this all the way around the leaf from the center to the bottom. Then set the veined leaf inside the bottom of a round bowl for about 30 minutes so it will dry with a slight curve. Tuck the leave around the cluster of Violets.
