Letting Babies Sleep On Their Stomachs

Years & years ago
when I was working in a maternity ward we always put the babies on their sides - alternating so their soft little heads wouldn't get
deformed !! NEVER on their backs, so I've always put my kids to sleep on their sides, mainly because if they " sick up " they might choke on it & so their heads don't get flattened !!
I'm a little late to this but as someone else stated the number of babies lost in this country due to SIDS dramactically decreased with the "Back to Sleep" program. The US looked to Europe because their # of sids related deaths was far lower than ours and the big factor was babies sleeping on their backs.
It really sounds like your new little grandson would benefit from being swaddled while he takes his naps and at night. My son liked to be swaddled until he was about 4 mos. old (which is longer than most kids but he was a preemie).
Here's one of those little rhymes they taught us at the hospital about how to arrange their little heads: to the right at night and left at light.
Here is a good article that covers alot of the issues that have been raised here:

Congratulations on your little g-baby!
My son would only sleep on his stomach - he tends to have a tender tummy like me - I have finally been diagnosed with acid reflux - after 30 some years of stomach aches - I still prefer to sleep on my stomach - even tucking my knees up under me - real romantic, just like the ladies in the movies, eh?
but the older I get, the faster my limbs fall asleep so I have to settle for my side
