I am making an ipod for a co-workers daughter. She wants strawberry cake ( and I planned on using a I hate to say it... box cake) and a hot pink ipod. I bought satin ice to cover the cake and I am going to use regular BC under the fondant. How much do I charge? I have so much to learn.

I don't really have an answer but I can give you a little jumping off point. I lurk in the pricing threads often and the general consensus usually sits around 2-3 times what it cost you to make the cake. Including ingrediants, the board, box etc. The higher end if it's going to be very time consuming the lower end if it's pretty basic.

I'm usually just happy if a cake didn't end up costing me anything - so here's a "bump" in hopes you'll get a little more help.

I agree 2 -3 times more than cost. And if the decorating is a little more involved, like carving a shape, then add on what you think your work and time is worth. I price my cakes slightly above grocery stores if they want a simple cake (BC icing, border and writing). But when a customer wants something custom that a grocery store won't do like an IPOD shaped cake with fondant icing it is going to cost considerably more! How many people did she plan on serving?

I TOO AM TRYING TO FIGURE PRICING OUT. I DON'T WANT TO SELL MY CAKES FOR TOO CHEAP, SO THEREFORE, I USUALLY GO WITH, 2.00-3.50 PER SERVING AND IF IT IS GOING TO BE A HUGE WEDDING THING I ADD AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE TO THAT PLUS THEY HAVE TO GIVE A DEPOSIT. AND IF I HAVE TO SET IT UP, I DO THE CAKE TABLE AND THERE IS A DELIVER AND SET UP CHARGE THERE TOO.

I agree with the two to three times what it cost ya! Remember to include the price of that Satin Ice! Also have you thought about using a cake mix extender? I never knew about one till I came here and it really makes a difference (especially) for the boss icon_lol.gif

If its only 12 servings then you should really charge a "minimum of" price.
For smaller sized cakes I have found the only way to make the cake worth the time I put into it without feeling underpaid at the end of it all is to charge a minimum of $35; as opposed to per serving/3x cost which would put this cake at under $20 either way. Don't feel bad about charging because you have to keep in mind the fondant you will be using and the work that goes into making a special cake like this is not something any grocery store will do.
