I am making a mushroom cake for my SIL. I have baked two 6 inch layers for the stem and I used the wonder mold pan for the cap. I am wondering what be the best way to keep this structurally sound, or is this even worth trying to attempt. I was thinking of putting a dowl through the center of all three layers, but I am concerned about the heaviness of the cap resting on the 6 inch layers icon_cry.gif. Should I put the cap on a cake board for extra support? I really hope someone can help me icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif !

yes! put a cake board under the cap and then put dowels in the stem to support the cap -- just like in traditional tiered cake assembly. just in this case there's an overhang. I'd use at least 4 if not 5 dowels as supports for the cap.

yes! then put one central dowel down through the whole thing to lock it all together.

and of course post pics of the final cake!

I tried to make mushroom cupcakes once and they didn't work out too good because by the time I iced the cap part they were to heavy to stay on the stems. So I would suggest that you put your cap on a board (if it won't distract from your design) then dowel your stem and then I would also put a dowel all the way down through the middle of the whole cake to help keep it together. It may be more than what you would need but if there's one thing I've learned is that better to be safe than sorry. Hope this helps a little!

the central dowel goes all the way top to bottom..

sharpen it to a really sharp point.

push in until it touches cake board under cap

take hammer -- hit it ....hit it again if needed.

it should easily pierce the cake board and go on down to bottom cakeboard.

for a cake this big I'd at least double that bottom board or use foam core.

be sure dowel goes into that board too (hit it w/ hammer -- I always listen and feel for it hitting my counter top)

Very cool!! I love your shroom...I did one for my DH's aunt that I'm pretty proud of as well...there's a pic in my photo's if your interested...I put it together the same way you did, 2 6" cakes but my top was a carved 8" with a circle under it and dowel through the middle...it held up great and it traveled 4 hours to where it met its doom...LOL

Thanks mthiberge, I like yours too!! I learned alot about what I would and wouldn't do next time. I tried to stick a dowel through the center of all three layers but even sharpened , it wouldn't go through the cake board under the cap icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif ! I think I would probably do what you did and carve the cap myself, I think maybe the wonder mold was too heavy for the two 6 inch layers. I had fun though, despite the challenges!!
