I have found a great local place that sells boxes at a decent price. they have all the standard sizes. My question is, how are you boxing up odd sized cakes, such as a 2 tiered birthday cake (wedding cakes, I bring not tiered yet, but can't do that with birthday cakes, etc) Also, some of my cakes have toppers on them that will bring the cake up much higher then 4 inches!
Are you just using regular boxes? Any ideas?

The only thing I can suggest is to find a box that's deep enough and wide enough that you could put your cake down into it and get it back out easily. Either that or you could just take the box lid off your cake box (cut it off) and sit the cake in that... I know of no boxes that will accomodate a 2 tier cake or a 2 tier cake w/a cake topper

So just stick with regular boxes? I assume I should line them?
For regular layer cakes with toppers I use a regular box but I tape the lid up so that it is covering still but not touching the topper. The box is open in the very front only. For tiered cakes.. I got a box from uhaul or one of those moving places. You need to tape both ends like is packed up... then you will stand it on it's end, so it is tall cut across the top and down one side. This makes it have a door kinda. I slip the cakes in there and close the door..LOL of course this box stays in my car, I don't give them to the client they are too big. I hope that made sense. If not let me know.
I work for a publishing company and we use uline for some of our shipping products, because they have some unusual stuff. But don't you find them expensive? (we have others we use that are cheaper, although we order thousands and thousands of boxes a day. (takes a lot of boxes to ship books! hahaha).
I love U-Line! Unlike many companies, they have several warehouses around the country, so shipping is cheaper. Some of their gift boxes and wrapping stuff are pricey, but I haven't found anyone to beat their corrugated box prices. And, if you need to try a box out for size, just call and order a free sample. I can place my order in the middle of the night and still have it here in 2 days!
As for cake boxes...all mine are 6 inches tall so you might look for those. For wedding cakes, I cut off the top of the corrugated box and use masking tape to secure plastic wrap VERY tightly over the top. It protects the cake from debris and I get a little window inside to check on it.
