I have a customer that orders a star wars cake for her son every year! SIGH. At least she wants a ship on his cake this year rather than Darth Vader and or Luke Skywalker. She also wants cupcakes again this year. Same thing on them though, light sabers. I would like to do something different for her than I did last year. I figured I should ask all you ceative geniuses out there if you have any ideas? Last year I just piped a red or blue straight line and then a grey handle at the end with a small horizontal line where the two colors meet. I think I also put some Wilton cake sprinkles on them. If you have the time and if you feel like doing all the extra work, why not a lightsaber sticking into the cupcake with flames on the side? Just a thought... HTH.

How would I do that? What would I make the sabers out of? Sounds really cool! Anna

You could make them out of gumpaste or fondant.

Yes, Joanne is correct... gumpaste or fondant. If you use fondant, you may have to do it ahead of time so they dry and harden. HTH.

I've never worked with either of these and I am not sure I am charging this customer enough for how much work it sounds like it would be. Of course I know there is a first time for everything and want to try this sometime. But should a first attempt be for a paying customer? She is quite the hoity toity lady of this town. Anna

Hi Anna,

I guess any option to let the lightsaber stand up on the cupcake would be time consumming. You could do whatever you're comfortable with right now or if you're daring enough, try something new. Maybe chocolate transfers and let it stand up on the cake? I'm just worried the lightsaber may not be big/sturdy enough to stand on your cupcake. Do a test run and see what's easy and comfy for you.

HTH
