I think I have my dowells the right size and when I set the 2nd cake on it turns out crooked. When you measure the dowell should it be hidden in the first cake or should you see the top just a little. Thanks for the help!!

You should be able to see the top of the dowel. Make sure that you make all the dowels the same height, and that they are in straight up and down. I like to use the "cake jacks" for bigger cakes. It takes the guess work out of if my dowels are REALLY all the same.

I like to cut my dowels to be flush with the top of the cake, but if you've got one sticking up out of the cake, then that's the reason it's crooked. The cake jack thing is new to me too.

Cake jacks are plastic doweling that has a screw-top that you adjust to the height you need. They have to standard heights (3" & 4") and are sold in bags of 4 (I believe).

The store that sells cake supplies and crafts by me sells cake jacks. I'm not sure if they are a run-of-the-mill item that smaller craft stores will carry.

It might help if you cut and measure each dowel seperately, that way you are ensured to have a level cake. My DH turned me on to this and it really works.

I mark & cut each dowel individually. I cut them flush with the top of the cake. I haven't had any problems leveling my cakes by doing this.

Wow agagnier, I had never seen that website before. They have the neatest little gadgets and the prices aren't too shabby. I think they are my new favorite site. How is the customer service?

Yea- thanks for the website - they have a ton of fun stuff on there!!!

Now - you just use them like regular dowels and sit the next cake and cakeboard right on top of them - sounds great!

Their customer service is awesome! My sister works their and is in charge of the internet orders. LOL!! But Her boss is great. If there is something you want but don't see and he has it in his store he'll pull it off the shelf for you. Just call or e-mail. He is so nice to me if I want something in bulk he puts it on with his orders for me so I don't have to pay shipping, and I pick it up at the store. Also when he cleans out his office or the back room he'll tell my sister to give me what he doesn't want. The last time I walked out with a box valued at about $75. It had cutters, tips, textured rollers, a heavy 16 inch cake board ( the wood kind ) cake toppers, Flower cutters (presses)......

It anyone is interested in something you don't see ask me and I'll see what I can do.

P.S ..The owner use to own his own cake shop too. (He makes some beautiful cakes)
