I'm somewhat new to cake decorating.... Why is it that I can not get dragees shipped to me in California and why does http://www.kitchengifts.com/lustredust.html not ship their Luster dust to California either? Just curious.....

I heard that they were illegal and that stores don't want to be sued. I found this out from a store and my wilton instructor.
here is a link that I found

Thanks for the link. That is very interesting. With all of the things that are going on in this world it is amazing that one Napa, Ca lawyer is focusing on silver Dragees!!!! I ate these as a kid and lots of them!!! Maybe that is whats wrong with me. icon_smile.gif Dragee poisoning!!! I guess I will just have to take a drive to Nevada and smuggle them back. Wonder how many years in prison I'd get for that....

Thats so strange! (different rulings for different states / countries etc!). I live in Ireland and am from the UK, here (and the UK) we can but tubs of dragees in the supermarkets in the same aisle as cake mixes! lustre dust is a bit more specialist (cake supply shops only), but it is readily available!

Hi,
I just moved to Colorado from San Diego, it is simply because of the small metal content (mostly lead) contained in some of the products. There are certain types of Mexican candy they won't sell either...for the same reason, lead content! Hope this helps! Strangely enough though, I was able to get some dragees shipped to me, I don't remember where I got them from, but the company is probably still listed on the bag they came in...I'll check and get back to you!

Uh, no! It's silver they're worried about in the dragees. Here;s a newspaper article about the idiot who's done this:

Luster dust has mica. No silver. It's probably not great for your lungs, but seriously...how much of it are you going to inhale? It's not like you're mining the stuff!

I am not a fan of people that have nothing better to do in life then bring up frivolous lawsuits! icon_mad.gif

I remember not being able to find the silver dragees when I lived in CA about 10 years ago. I think that must've been the beginning of the ban on them.

I just read the article and all I can think of to say to that lawyer is "Get a life!" I think it very disingenuous of him to say he's doing this "for the children." A more likely explanation is he's doing it "for the settlement." I tell my sister (who's an ex-pastry chef turned lawyer) that this is why people hate lawyers! Grrrrrrr! icon_mad.gif

I will have to do some more research and see if I can get them in Reno, Nv. If I do I will post where I found them. If anyone else knows of any online stores that will ship them to California let me know.

bobwonderbuns
Thanks for the offer!! If I cant find them I will keep you in mind!!

I wonder if the FBI has a look out for people smoggling in dragees to California! Oh the madness of it all. LOL

I stand corrected, it was the silver content they were worried about, not lead. But you would have to eat dragees by the pounds every day for years to acually have a serious problem wth it. And as far as the luster dust goes, I could buy that with no problems, so I'm not too sure why they wouldn't ship that to you! Sorry for the goof icon_redface.gif
