ok...here's the deal. didn't think i had a cake supply house near me (nashville, tn) but i did a search on the internet today while my little hellion was napping, and realized there WAS one. i told my husband i was off to look at their items and i had to hurry since they close at 4:30, it was 3:15 then, and it would take me approximately 30-40 minutes to get to the other side of town. i get there around 4:05, and i start grabbing things left and right. i got out of there at 4:56 with a dent in my pocket to the size of $356!!! i came out of there with 32 different colors of dust....some super, some luster, some petal. of course many other items also, but now i'm fearing that i paid too much and got over excited with the whole impulse buying. most were $2.79 for 2 grams although there are a few that are 4 grams, a few were 2.99, and then the super gold was $3.29. they are made by ck products, but when i just tried going onto their website, you have to have a store in order to see prices.

would someone mind telling me if these were good prices or not? i'm seeing this advertisement to the right side with cake central brand of luster and their prices and i'm getting very nervous.
thanks so much, starla

Yes, but with internet shopping, you must also consider shipping. Don't look any further and appreciate your new finds.

Oh have fun with your new treasures - don't worry about being charged - there will always be some place that is cheaper or more expensive. Just enjoy your toys - I'm jealous!

This was a bad post to read on the day I'm going to MY cake supply store! LOL I think my worst ever was $150.00! However, if MY store had that many luster dusts......I'd be your rival!

Have fun with your new toys!

You know? when you ad a little color to the liquid you are using to paint with the dust. you only need to buy the white dust?
This is something you figure out when you live in south america, away from any good cake store...
Enjoy your toys, I'm sure now your cakes will look more expensive and you'll get your money back soon icon_biggrin.gif

paolacaracas , do you mean that you can just add regular gel color to white dust and get ANY COLOR???

Who has ben keeping THIS amazing trick secret? icon_cool.gif HOW COOL!

Could you please explain (in great and exhausting detail) how one would go about doing this?

Man...this site is SOO cool!

Thanks a bazillion,

ok, you tell me not to worry, so i start to get excited and then you tell me i didn't need all those different colors...yikes! someone call the freakin medic cause i think i just flatlined! icon_lol.gif

actually, i'm just teasing, and i appreciate all the encouragement and the hint about the water trick! i walked into the store, and just started putting things i saw into a basket. candy molds, a fire truck pan, a sports ball pan, some push molds, some extracts, some "lace" embellishment molds,(which i'm really excited about using), 3 cake books, some cloth bags, and some baby and beauty oriented cutting thingies...hehehehe very technical!

i've already spent close to a thousand, and by the time i get everything i want, like the airbrush etc, the total will be on up to $2000 or so...but here's the deal: i'm a stay at home mommy. my husband gives me money each month for me to spend on my needs and small things for our daughter, but then when he gets a bonus at work, he halfs it with me, so that's where my "startup" money has come from....perfect timing too!!! it's been fun to be able to go into the stores and get what i want to get, within reason obviously! i've also made several $100 trips to sams and costco for large bulk grocery items. i'm having a lot of fun!!!!!! and i'm so appreciative of all the help and humor i'm getting from this site! once again, thank you!

btw: beth, which part of kentucky? although i'm now in franklin tn, right outside of nashville, i'm originally from morehead.

Don't let anyone else tease you. I also went dust happy when I found someone who had way too many for me to get one of each. I spent close to 400 that day. Like you not just dusts but other play toys. Enjoy and experiment.

thanks...after i walked away from that last post, i started wondering if i came across as arrogant or boastful, and i was just coming back on here to edit my post. i do not wish to offend any of you, my newfound friends and confidantes...thanks for the encouragement. i'm so excited about all of this, that i just get carried away.

let me explain a bit here: i have a.d.d. which i take medicine for, but still have to struggle with some of the classic symptoms such as disorganization and SPONTANEOUS IMPULSIVE ACTIONS..hehehehe. one of the worst (or best, depending on how you look at it) is that i can spend hours working on tiny projects but have trouble cleaning my entire house in one day. it's always worked against me until now. i researched famous people with a.d.d. (think bill gates!!!) and the secret to their success is that they took the things that were considered to be negative and used them to their advantage. my thoughts are that i love to bake, i love to make people happy, and i have a "problem" with being too detailed, so i really feel so good about starting a cake business. i'm making alot of free cakes and so far, everyone is amazed that i'd never done this decorating thing before, so it looks quite promising....i really feel like this is where god wants to be; my own little niche.

now if i could just stop the incessant thinking about baking and possible creations!!! i'm starting to get inspiration from everything around me, and my husband started to worry about me when i commented that a friends "his and her's outhouse" themed shower curtain would make a cute design for a relaxed bridal shower cake. icon_redface.gif

Is just you put a little vodka, (or whatever you use for liquid in a little bowl, the add the dust and when you have a paste, ad a tiny bit of gel color with a tooth pick until you get the color you need.
Thats all, can you believe it???

I didn't know about the coloring of dust trick ei ther! I thought I had read about all the tricks here! Thanks paolacaracas!

starlataylor, I think those prices are pretty good. My local shop sells them for at least 3.50 each for the mini little containers.

Have fun!
