Has Anyone Ever Made Cakeballs Look Like Rattles?

I have an upcoming order for cake balls along with a baby shower cake. It just hit me that I could possibly make the cakeballs look like rattles, but wondered if anyone has done this. I thought I could use a toothpick for the long part, and somehow make a small ring (maybe out of gumpaste?) for the end. I use toothpicks to dip my cake balls into chocolate, so the only difference would be adding the ring.

it sounds like a great idea. Maybe you could get some lollipop sticks or loops to use. depending on what flavor you make the cake balls, maybe you could use thin peppermint sticks or something else edible like chocolate covered pretzel sticks. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

if scaled appropriately...

lifesavers for the loop at bottom of handle and lollipop stick for the stick?

Hmm lollipop sticks would be a little thicker and more proportioned than a tooth pick. I looked at cake pictures of rattles and instead of a ring on the end a lot of them just have a smaller ball. So I could definitely use gumpaste for that.

Now to come up with the theme for the cake itself lol

a cute idea I've seen for showers is to make a pacifier by putting a pink or blue jelly bean in a white lifesaver, and then glue another lifesaver on for the pacifier ring. The ones I saw had real glue and weren't edible, but RI might work, haven't actually tried it myself

Wilton has a cake for baby showers that I love that you could make your own with the "rattle" cake balls...Let me see if I can attach the picture...

You could also use those white thin sticks that Wilton has for in between the 2 cakeballs, like lollipopsticks. They're not edible, but at least foodsafe and you could colour them with foodcolouring. I got them in 2 lengths, just shorten them with a knife to the length you need.. In theory, if you want them larger and have the miniball pann you could bake muffins in that and glue 2 together for the ball part and insert a dowel (thicker ones) in between. Could cover those in Fondant to decorate, would probably also be easier to decorate, as the would be larger.

Thanks for the alternative ideas, but she specifically wants cake balls. I just thought I'd dress it up a little. I talked to her today and she thought the rattle idea was great. She's thinking blocks that spell out the baby's name for the cake. We shall see icon_smile.gif

Here they are! I wanted to add a little decoration to them, but ran out of time. I had 3 cakes and 2 orders for cake balls due that day.
