Hi Everybody!!!!! icon_biggrin.gif

I just won (ebay) a Canon IP3000 printer which its sole purpose is for edible images!! thumbs_up.gif Does anybody have one? How easy are the cartridges to care for? What's a good place to buy ink carts and rice paper? Do the cartridges last as long as regular ink?

Sorry for all the questions all at once, I just wanna be prepared when it arrives!!

Joe

Congrats! I have a Canon I450 dedicated for edible images only. I don't use rice paper but frosting sheets. There are a few places to order them:

www.sugarcraft.com
www.kopykake.com
www.photofrost.com

I personally like kopykake 'cause they give you software too that works well. I don't like rice paper because the colours aren't as bright and it doesn't meld well with the cake making it difficult to cut.

Good luck to you and congrats,
Suzanne M.

P.S. You can see some of the cakes I've made with the edible images on my site.

Congratulations on your win! You will really love using it! I have the Cannon 4000 that Santa was so gracious to leave me! I like KopyKake, too. Their prices are reasonable, they have a good operation-got my order quickly! Enjoy!!!

That's great thumbs_up.gif . I too recommend kopykake.com for your inks and frosting sheets. They supply all the other sites so why not get it from the source. You are going to love it! No...the inks will not last as long as regular ink and they require some special maintenance to prevent clogs. Overall though...easy and fun!

That sounds like a great deal. I love eBay! I've been collecting cake pans, but think I will be looking for an edible printer soon, looks like a fun way to personalize a cake!

Suzanne: I went all through your website and it looks great! Your cakes are beautiful! thumbs_up.gif Janice

I have not used it, because i dont have a printer yet, but some of the ladies from ladycakes order their supplies from icingmagic.com. The ones who have are realy happy with the service and products.

I bought a Canon I450 over a year ago. I got a startup kit with ink cartridges, cleaning cartridges and a multitude of different frosting sheets from photofrost. I'm still using it and only order additional ink. The cartridges are refillable. A couple of the cakes I've used them on are displayed on http://cakes.rebeccarank.com under Adult Cakes (they are not x-rated).

Janice: Thanks for the compliment...the site is still a work in progress. My sister, the programmer, made it for me. However, I haven't got around to adding text to all my pictures yet.

Lisa: Thanks...I received the ebook...great hints and tips. Very much appreciated.

Rebecca: Nice cakes! I love the flowers on the first photo cake...really beautiful!

Ebay is the best place to get one. Staples and Canon are charging $100plus S&H. I got mine on ebay for $31 plus $30 S&H. icon_biggrin.gif

That's great news Joe! eBay is a really great place to get one thumbs_up.gif . Amazon.com also has a great deal right now on both the iP3000 and the iP1500. Free ship too.

But this has really caught my attention, and I am wondering...are ALL the canon printers enabled to do this type of printing...and is this limited to JUST the CANON printers? I noticed different series numbers...I want to try to do this!!!
thanks
sahm

It works with most Canon Bubble Jet printers. The edible ink cartridges were designed to fit Canon (Canon style) printers so they aren't compatible with other brands.

I used to have a cannon I350 - but it clogged before a year's time. I now have the Cannon IP3000 but have not had an order to use it with yet. I am waiting until I get an order before putting in the ink. I don't want it to clog up before I use it! The clogging and constant cleaning of the heads is what killed my last one. I loved it tho, and really wanted another one. I hope this one works better! I also bought the frosting sheets instead of the rice paper this time. I like them a lot better.

That is a huge problem if you leave the cartridges in. Being exposed to air dries them out. I use an i350...no problems. What I do is after I print out an image, I remove the entire print head (cartridges and all) and store it in a ziplock bag (squish out the excess air). You can also just remove the ink cartridges and store those in a ziplock bag. Put in cleaning cartridges and run a cleaning cycle. Leave the cleaning cartridges in until you plan to use it again. This will prevent clogs.

I was planning on doing that this time, but wasn't sure it would work. I don't have any cleaning heads tho...? The problem last time was that the waste ink reservoir got full from all of the cleaning and it had to be "sent in" for repair - which would cost just as much to buy a new one! What exactly do the cleaning heads do?? What are they made of that they clean?

These are cleaning cartridges that are full of a nontoxic cleaning solution. You install them while performing the clean/deep clean function rather than using the edible ink cartridges (wastes a lot of ink). You don't have to have them, they just make cleaning and maintaining the print head easier. You can manually clean the print head without ever using the cleaning function or cleaning cartridges. I do this from time to time to keep my printer working well. I wrote an E-Book that goes into a lot more detail. Would you like a copy?

Yes! That would be great. I love to do photo cakes and photo editing, etc. I once took a young girl's picture and added her to a pic of Orlando Bloom (her idol) and it looked like they were a couple. She just loved it! That makes it all worth while! Anyway, I want to keep this printer in good condition for a long time! Thanks again. (I think my email is in my profile...let me know if its not!)

I PM'd you a copy. The cake you did sounds like it was great! I think the possibilities are endless when it comes to what you can do with edible images.
