I'm in the middle of course 2, where there is only 1 cake, and I'm going through withdrawal. I think DH's co-workers are too because he said they all asked him where the cake was yesterday.

So, I'm looking for a cake/cupcakes to do for some practice (and to try out some new recipes). But, even though I have TONS of pictures in my favorites none of them are jumping out at me right now. I did see some cupcakes frosted with the leaf tip to look like sunflowers...those were cute. I'm also considering doing cookies, since I have never done those before.

What do you like to do when you're just playing around?

I still like to do the cakes in the Wilton course books. I still find them very beautiful. I also like to go through the Wilton Yearbooks and create out of there.

HTH

I go to the dollar store and buy pound cakes or if they don't have it, go to the market and get me one (which can be a little bit more pricey). This means no baking, which I don't have a problem with since I only want to practice with icing techniques. HTH.

I practice on dummies so we don't have to eat the cake. Lord knows I don't need it!

I have been doing cakes since 1959 and I still practice. My favorite thing to do is sit down and try out a new gumpaste flower. I find it relaxing, and rewarding if the flower turns out well.

Thanks for the replies...maybe I'll pick up a Wilton Yearbook. Do you know if they sell any of the older ones, or just the current one?

I'm not too concerned about eating the cake...it usually goes to work with DH! icon_biggrin.gif However, I do have some cupcakes leftover from an order this past weekend that I have been eating! icon_sad.gif

Shirley...I can't wait to take the fondant/gumpaste class. It sounds like fun! I DO have some chocolate clay in the fridge I could play with, though.

Thanks again!

I like to try several things at once on a practice cake. I'll try a new recipe for the cake itself, plus a new icing, plus whatever new technique or design I want to try out. I cover many bases at once.

I never have time to practice. Unfortunately, my practice is done on the actual cake I'm making for someone. Not always a good idea!
