I have an upcoming college graduate cake due in may .. I was just wondering how I could go about getting a diploma .. hmm .. lets see here .. I want it to be like a plaque, but old time looking, know what I mean? I kinda want it free flowing looking, you know, not just straight sides and all .. it doesnt have to be large because that wont be the only thing on the cake .. I am thinking I could make some fondant pretty thin, seems like that would drape naturally on the edge of the cake, but how do you go about writing on it if you dont have an edible image printer? Any ideas?
yes edible ink pens would work ... now, do you know where I might be able to find something I could use to write out the words Diploma .. like a stencil? I have really bad handwriting .. sigh ...
Look at the different fonts on your computer. Also try downloading from dafont.com. You can trace these onto the fondant and go over with pens.

I know how frustrating it is with bad handwriting, no edible printer and custom wording on cakes can be. I have decided some mylar (or even some heavy gauge acetate/plastic), which I get at the stencil section of any craft store, would do the trick. I print out my text, tape it to my self healing board, tape the mylar over it and voila my very own stencil. I can either use buttercream (laying over cake and using my angled spatula) or food color using foam (which can give it a rather "old" look depending on your font and food color). HTH.
What I have done to make the diploma, I rolled fondant out, tore the edges a little, did my writing (I just did buttercream) and then laid it out on flower formers to get the draped look. After it is dry, I then go around the edge with gold luster dust. Sorry, but I don't have a picture with me. If you would like, I will attach it tonight.
fooby, those sound like really good directions, just a few questions, what is a self healing board and what is mylar?
