I am horrible at pricing...and thinking alot about it lately. Does anyone have a "general" base price that is good to start at per cake mix or per slice? I feel like I just guess at a price to charge when asked the price of a cake. Any advice. By the way, love this site, I am quickly becoming an addit.

Welcome to Cakecentral!

You might want to try the Price Matrix:

Another option would be to add up all your "costs" and multiply that by three ..gives you a good ballpark figure and you can make adjustments from there.

Can you contact some other bakers in your area to see what their pricing is so you can see what your local market will bear? I always use the "I'm in charge of the food for my sister's (wedding / shower / anniversary party) and need pricing information...."

When I first heard about using cake mixes for sale to customers..that was like in 1995..and at that time I took a class with a very sucessful baker in ROCHESTER, NY and she had a very large operation that only used doctored DH.

She informed us that she charged about $15.00 per mix. She basically did sheet cakes and used a projector to decorate her cakes.

So, I think that a base price of maybe $20 or 25 bucks a cake mix? adding maybe 10.00 for icing ( depending on what kind you use...I use a swiss meringue butter cream and it cost then about 6.00 a pound )and icing the cake and another 10 or 15 for decorating? depending on how long an what you do to it..

so, let's say that would be a 1/4 sheet....on the low end that would be around $45.00...which is not a bad price to start with..

HTH
