Be honest. I just did my first fair tonight out of fondant. I have not used fondant since my 3rd wilton class almost 2 years ago. I can't figure out how to attach it, so it is in my photo album. What do you think and please be honest. How can I make it better? It took me 2 hours to do - is that normal or is it because it was my first. If I were to make a cake with a fairy like this, how much extra should I charge? Thanks for your advice!

She is cute. It does take a while, but you will get faster the more you do it. I would recommend bigger eyes and maybe a nose. ( not sure if the picture is not showing it or if it's not there.)

Your Fairy is sooooo cute!! You did a great job. It takes me a long time to make figures too. I think if I did more, I would get faster. I cannot answer the pricing question, but maybe someone else can.

I think you've done very well and you should be please with your fairy.
I do a lot of figurines and I did start making them out of fondant, but I could never get them to keep their shape and they took forever to dry. I now use a modelling paste recipe, that is based on fondant but is much easier to work with, in my opinion, it also holds it's shape and dries nice and hard.
If I was to give you some advice, it would be to roll you paste out very thinly for any clothing, and let the fondant firm up before you try to paint a face on. It's really easy to draw a face onto hard fondant with just a marker of a paintbrush, but when you do it with soft fondant, it usually dents it.
As for price, I can't help, being in Australia I would charge at least $40 for a fairy, my bride and groom toppers are usually around $160 but it depends where you live and the market you work with.

She is really cute. I haven't tried making an figures yet. I'd like to try and plan on doing that over the summer when the boys ( I have five of them) are outside playing ...LOL!

She's sweet! I'd maybe add some gumpaste to help her keep shape and sit up more errect. Also bigger eyes. I really like her pointy shoes...too cute. Keep going and you'll have it mastered in no time.

She's adorable! If you would like her to sit up more then try doing her in intervals. I usually make the trunk first and let that harden before attaching the head and extremities. Also, to help make sure the other pieces are secure, I insert spagetti noodles into the trunk when it is still soft, Have them peek out 1/4", one for the neck/head, and one each for each extremity. If the noodle is to long at insertion you can break a bit off. Finally, if you want her to harden faster try mixing your fondant with gumpaste or use gumtex. The fairy cake I've posted in my gallery is an 8" 2 layer cake and I sold it for $65.00

I was going to comment in the gallery, but i guess you don't have that feature enabled. I think you did a wonderful job on modeling. I am in agreement with the eyes being a little bigger. I think eyes are what gives a face character ( I am partial to precious moments teardrop shape) anyhow, maybe indent the eyesocket a bit, then roll a tiny piece of fondant to give the eye a dimension. Your other cakes in the gallery are super! Maybe you should enable comments so folks can leave comments about your creations.

Thank you very much for all your comments! Helen, thanks for letting me know I didnt' have the comments on. I don't know why they turned off, so I put them on. Fran - can you give me your modeling paste recipe? That was a problem I had because the fondant kept moving on me. That is why she looks like she is leaning. i couldn't keep her up - she kept smushing. Thanks again for all the honesty. I really want to get better at this. icon_smile.gif
