I am doing my first stacked cake this week and have question about decorating. I am doing a sheet cake with the half soccer ball on top. Should I decorate the soccer ball before I place it on top of the cake or wait till I get it on the sheet cake? Does it matter?

Thanks,
Cindy

Well i think it will be easier to handle if you put it on the cake before decorating. If you decorate it and then try to put it on top of your sheet cake, how are you thinking of avoiding messing up all your little stars? Plus you'll need to stick the cake down properly on to the sheet cake, if it has decorations on it, you wont be able to do that.
hope this helps

Thanks Nati!! That is what I was thinking and I am a fumble fingers, so I'm sure I would have repair work if I decorated first. I'm excited to do this cake, even though it is not going to be really elaborate. It is a new challenge and I'm sure it will be a learning experience. I'm also doing the slumber party cake for one of my best friend's granddaughter this week. I am really looking forward to doing it. I think she is going to be really excited when she sees it.

Cindy
The other thing is that if you try to repair, you may find it wont be as neat as the original. I have found this with character cakes.
Good luck with your other cakes and happy baking

I would decorate the ball part way and then turn over onto the frosted sheet cake then finish Why??? because it is hard to get close to the cake done neatly

Hi,
I have completed that type of cake using the half of ball. It was easier for me to decorate after I had placed it on the half of sheet cake. It came out great. You will have fun doing this cake. icon_lol.gif

I read too fast again and missed the part where you said 1/2 of the ball

Yes I would decorate it on the cake also

I thought you were doing the whole ball and then it would be hard to get under the curve of the ball when I made the cake with the ball I used both halves and put 2 dowel rods through the ball to keep it steady

Thanks everyone for the great advise. I will decorate once it is on the sheet cake. I know I need to dowel under the soccer ball. Do I also need to run a dowel down thru both cakes?

I didn't find the half ball to be heavy, so I didn't use any dowel rods. It didn't need to be supported.
