Phew! When I read the subject of this forum I was worried that it was about the Poop cake that I posted a picture of about 30 minutes ago!
I never noticed the meringue powder smell but after reading another forum about it really not being necessary I am going to try leaving it out of my buttercream.
I'm so glad you wrote this, I was using some RI I had made around christmas (dont worry, its for a display not consumption! lol) and I noticed that it freaking stank and was scared that it was rancid (cuz I was afraid of like food poisoning myself accidentally with it, lol).
I personally really like the smell...It's sweet smell fills the room when I use it...and I always use it. ![]()
Yep, can't stand the smell or taste. I have heard there are brands that are better but not sure what the company name might be. The taste I dislike I am pretty sure is the cream of tartar, yet I use it in Italiam meringue icing and I can't taste it. Maybe it is the gums they use in it but it is nasty.

Okay, for a minute I thought I was strange, because I kind of like it's smell too...Thank you Country Kittie for making me brave enought to admit my "secret shame".. ![]()
SERIOUSLY,
TRY LEMON JUICE!!!! (in the royal icing) it will probably change your opinion. it changed mine! i used to hate royal icing until someone (mthlberge? i think-) gave me the tip.
when i add it to buttercream, i can not taste it either, because i think using real butter, milk, vanilla and sea salt- mask it.
i think i have heard someone say too that they use just powdered eggwhites instead. (no cream of tarter?) ....i have not "looked" for it, but have noticed that super target carries it in the baking aisle.
Thanks for the lemon juice tip! The MP makes me gag and it makes me not want to use royal icing so now I should be fine, thanks!!!
your welcome. you basically just replace all the water in the recipe with lemon juice (its not just adding a tsp or so like adding extract in addition to..replace ALL the liquid. )at times when lemon just wont do, like on chocolate cake, i will use up to 3 tb of a good extract - vanilla, raspberry etc to get a nice intense flavor and to cover the aftertaste of the mp.

Well, glad I'm not the only one!!! LOL
I switched to a different brand and it smells AWESOME! I love to smell it. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks it stinks.
I personally like the smell of mp. I lift the lid sometimes just to take a whiff. But when I make royal icing, I always add about a teaspoon of clear vanilla. Everyone who eats my decorated cookies love the taste of it. I have not tried the lemon juice but that sounds tasty! I will have to try it.
