I am making a birthday cake for my nephew who is turning 3. His party is going to be a CARS theme. I am trying to make a cake shaped like Mater the tow truck.

If anybody has any ideas that could help please let me know.

Thank you all very much.

Here is a link to FamilyFun.com where they make a Jeep cake - perhaps you could modify it to look like Mater?

I just finished a Cars and Tow Mater set of cakes this weekend! Check my photos and you can PM me if you like. The Cars cake was just the 3D Wilton car with a few slight changes, and the Tow Mater was cut from a 9x13.

Thank you all for your ideas. Kitagrl, how did you make the Mater? Did you just stack the cake?

Yes I cut it and stacked it and then the sides of the back were made using fondant...I used thick enough fondant where it did not have to dry first. The stuff in the back was tricky but I didn't try to copy it exactly...I formed some fondant on a skewer for the, um, you know that thing that holds the hook, and used black licorice ropes for all the rope.

I airbrushed the sides but you could probably do it with a paintbrush as well.

Don't forget to share a pix when you are done!
