I bought a mixer at Kohl's sale because I thought it was a super deal, even though they didn't have the color I really wanted. (turns out there is the same deal other places, too.) Anyway, I'm taking course 2 and need to make a batch (actually 2 batches) of royal. I'm considering making it with my hand mixer so I can order the other KA. I need the royal for class on Sunday, so it likely wouldn't be here in time. Would that be a really bad idea? I can put up with holding the mixer for that long as long as it's not going to burn up. It does ok with making stiff Wilton BC, FWIW.

It'll be fine. I had made RI with a hand mixer before plenty of times and never had a problem. thumbs_up.gif

Thanks! Maybe I'll enlist DH's help...those muscles have to be good for something, right?! icon_wink.gif

I think it depends on your hand mixer. I sent one hand mixer to its grave with my first batch of RI. I ended up purchasing a second hand mixer recommended by my instructer that could survive the RI beating icon_smile.gif

I have never done RI with a hand mixer but from what I understand as long as you take it slow, and listen to the mixer you should be okay.

Please share the brand/model if you would. I LOVE my KA, but need to advise my sis of a fairly inexpensive hand mixer to buy for when I'm out there next month to make my nephew's b-day cake.

The instructor gave 2 choices - the kitchen aid hand mixer or this one from cuisnart. I chose the cuisinart.

Just in case the link doesn't work it's the

Hmmm....I have a Black and Decker Power Pro. It says it's 200 watts. Doesn't sound like much, huh? I really don't want to burn it up! Would it give "warning signs" before it goes?

When mine died (it was a sunbeam) it started to get really warm, it slowed down and was very laboured and I could smell hot metal. It all happened in a very short time (less than a minute).

I thought maybe it just needs to cool off and it will be fine. Even the next day when I turned it on it made a very pitiful sound and then stopped icon_sad.gif

I have made my RI with a hand mixer since I was 16, I am now 42! I got it as a gift from my younger brothers as I wanted to start my trousseau. I keep hoping that it will die so that I can buy a KA handheld. I am limited by my kitchen size since I moved here so my KA mixer stand is in a box in my garage. It has not come out of the box in 2 yrs.
I make all my icings with my old GE hand mixer. I am not even sure they make small appliances anymore.
Good luck with your RI
