Yesterday I wrote about the problems I had making my first sheet cake.
The cake broke apart, the icing wouldn't crust. The spray color didn't work and I had to use Pastry Pride rather then the whipped cream I wanted in my filling since the cake was so big it wouldn't fit into my refrigerator.
Well I took the cake to the party today and the little boy who it was made for just went on and on about how "cool" the cake was and how it's the "best" looking cake he had ever seen. He stood there for about 15 mins just taking it all in and had a big smile on his face.
He brought ever kid over and showed him how "great" his cake was. All the kids loved it and three went over to ask their mom if they could have the same cake at their birthday party.
I over heard some of the mothers saying how great the cake tasted and asked where the cake was "bought" from. When my cousin told them I made it they flipped out saying they could not believe how great it was.
I hated this cake. It gave me more problems then any cake before and I didn't like the way it came out. I just kept saying "good thing I'm doing the cake for free or I would die giving this to anyone".
Well seeing the little boys joy and hearing all the great remarks by people who did not know I made the cake made it all worth while. I was so happy when I left the party.
So sometimes when we think our cake is the worst it could just be our own insecurity. I know this cake was.
It's the Star Wars cake in my photos if you want to see it.
A good ending to a rough time! Even though it was such a headache for you, you made that little boy's day something special! GRATS hun! Jen
I know what you mean Joannek,
Your cake is awesom. I worked on a cake Saturday that was two different kinds of frosting and it seemed like nothing wanted to go right but when I delivered it on Sunday the father just raved about how cool it was. Later that day I was shopping and the little boy called me and told me how much he loved his cake and his friends were all jealous because their cakes never look that good. He couldn't stop saying thank you. I asked his mom did she tell him to call me and she said he was the one that asked for my phone number. I wanted to cry.... It renewed my faith and made my day. ![]()

Well done, JoanneK! You stressed so much because you cared so much, and you gave one very happy little boy a great cake!
Congratulations! I know how stressful it is to do something this big. I will be baking the same size cake tonight... not looking forward to it
The cake looks great!
I promised my 10-year old stepdaughter she's getting a Star Wars cake on her 11th birthday. I'm sure I'll be freaking out making this but you can never replace the joy of a child when she/he shows off the "cool" cake to their friends.
Ok, since my DH has been a Star Wars FREAK since the day the first movie came out (yes, he goes to the conventions, and my son's middle name is Lucas for George Lucas) I feel qualified in saying the following... that has to be the coolest Star Wars cake in this galaxy!! And I am so happy for you that you got that kind of response on it! You deserved it, that part is obvious, but more importantly, you NEEDED it!!! You needed that reminder that you are one WICKEDLY GOOD cakerator!!
Very nice cake there, I know we are our worst critics. When I get too down on my cakes I go to the grocery store and take a look, makes me feel a "little" better. I think people are looking for the different items we do that's what makes them special when there from the heart. Keep up the GREAT work.
Hi Joanne,
Your cake came out really spectacular! We are our own worst critics. But the joy that you bring is what it is all about. That's probably what drives us all. May God continue to bless you and I hope your next creations won't be quite as troublesome!!
Thanks everyone! I got photos emailed to me from the party and there is one where all the kids are looking at the cake with smiles. I printed that one out to remind me that others don't see every flaw we do when we decorate it.
I guess I'm learning to not be so hard on myself. I have to remember that people are used to store decorated cakes and anything else blows them away.
You guys are the best. Without CC I couldn't have done it.
Hey Jo... here's a little exercise that I like to do when I am angry with how a cake looks...
Step back one big step, kind of squint your eyes a little bit so that your vision is just a teeny bit foggy. (Optional, slightly dim the lights) Now look at the gorgeous cake sitting there! Now you're seeing what everyone else will see!! Oh, and now you see why everyone calls you "JoAnne the cake genius". (I can only assume you are called that... I mean, LOOK at your cakes!!) It never looks as good sitting on your messy table with a harsh spotlight pointed at it as it does in a party setting with eager little lips smacking all over the room waiting to chow down! ![]()
