Thought I'd share how this went. I got the hex supports, cake plates and dowel support system from logicpic, and I liked it. I didn't transport the cake stacked because the reception yesterday was up stairs that were like climbing a mayan temple.
ANYway. I did learn one valuable thing.
In this system, the cakes are put down over the center dowel. I took the separate tiers with the hexagon support frames and dowel legs already inserted in each tier, so I could just stack them and be done. Well, putting a cake tier down OVER a dowel rod that is sticking up 13" from the base is easy enough once you find the hole in the center of the cake plate, BUT if you have the hexagon plate already set into the top of the cake, watch out!--the dowel coming up through the center of the cake may not, in fact, line right up with the hole in the hex plate, leaving you holding a 10" round suspended 3" above a bottom tier, with the dowel bumping against the hex frame rather than cleanly threading itself through the center hole...augh. I got it to work, by serious fiddling with the angle of the dowel from under the 10" round while holding the cake in the air with one hand hoping not to bang into the bottom tier.
Lesson: When assembling, place bottom cake over dowel, THEN place hex plate over dowel, THEN place next cake over dowel, THEN place hex plate over dowel. This way the hex plate and legs can fit right over the dowel and slide down and into the cake...don't know why I didn't think of this, but sometimes my "plan ahead" ideas don't work out so well.
It may not make sense here, but believe me, if you have to build one of these, you'll get what I mean.
Hope this helps someone not almost have a cake disaster.
thanks thats good to know. are you taking a deposit for this system or adding it to the price of the cake with out them needing to return it. It looks like its a pretty sound setup, i haven;t actually purchased it yet, but am considering it.
This is crazy...
I did take a deposit (my first) for this wedding (plateau and logicpic items). And for the first time ever, I didn't get all my items returned. The lady who was suppOsed to gather the items that I very specifically discussed with the catering manager (who was going to CUT the cake and dissassemble it) well, she got sick and didn't attend the wedding. SO someone ELSE grabbed just the silver plateau and I don't know what happened to the hexagon frames at $17 ea with shipping...I called the venue, but they're not there today of course. I can't believe it.
And I stupidly handed her the deposit check back (for $130) when I got the plateau and said I'd call the venue and see, because it was very clear when I left yesterday exactly WHAT items he was going to set aside for me--I even said, "I need the hex frames from inside the support. They look cheap but they AREN'T." And he said, "I know." They weren't built into the cost of the cake, plates yes, hex frames, no.![]()

Hopefully he calls me tomorrow and they just didn't get set aside for the "other" person who picked stuff up.
im so sorry to hear that, i hope someone has just put them in a safe place.
on the very few weddding cakes that i have done i put a list under the cake board attached to the plateau of all the things that need returning. even though the bride has a list and i have told them, this way if someone else gets to take the cake apart at least they see the list too.
