I need to make a football cake for The Super Bowl. I need help making the shape of the football and how to get a great brown color?

I know there's a cake pan out there that's a football you could use... and for the color... I use chocolate b/c for anything I do in chocolate that way you are guaranteed a good true brown color. icon_biggrin.gif

The chocolate is a great idea, however, I can't use chocolate. One of the people I am making the cake for can not have chocolate. I had that thought, too.

Do you want a true 3-D football shape? If you just want the basic shape, you could simply cut it out of a 9 by 13. You could even make two cakes and stack them. As far as the frosting icon_confused.gif...wow, that takes some thinking if you can't use chocolate. The only I thing I could think of (other than simply mixing food coloring into white frosting) is to use a caramel frosting. It wouldn't be quite as dark, but it might do in a pinch. Let me know if you need a recipe.
