Hello All,
I'm taking the Wilton's Fondant/Gumpaste class and the final class is next week. The instructor is very nice and helpful and her flower looks nice, so I thought that since mine look like crap that it was me who couldn't get the hang of it.
Oh she don't teach from the book so I didn't read it. Well after practicing and the fanasty flower still looked funny and the carnation looked like a ruffled hat I decide to read the book.
Good thing because the book says to cut 4 large and 4 small shapes for the fanasty flower whereas she told us only 3 of each. So I looked back at the carnation as well and the book says how many circles to cut for the petals which again are more than she told us to cut.
Needless to say now I'm disappointed and feel ripped off.
Should I bring this to her attention and ask why she told us differently?
Would appreciate any advise.
Thanks,

It's a fantasy flower, not a real flower. There's nothing it's supposed to look like.
Feel free to feel ripped off because the instructor isn't following the curriculum/book.

Yes, I would bring it up. Just casually mention that you were practicing at home and found that the book instructions were easier for you to follow... Then let her know she may want to mention it to her future students... She is just learning this stuff too. Maybe if you say something you will feel better about it...
As a Wilton instructor myself, she absolutely should be teaching what's in the book. I often give extra tips and tricks, but I always teach what's in the book. I would say something to her. Hopefully it's an honest mistake and she doesn't remember. However, there's always the possibility that she didn't do her homework.
For the carnation, the number of circles you use is somewhat optional. You use what will fit, which could be anywhere from 2-4 depending on how much you ruffle everything.
thanks everyone for the replies. I bring it up casually to her doing class
next week.
MaisieBake, I know that it's not a real flower, but it should look like the picture illustrated in the book. I also know that flowers in nature aren't perfect either.

When I took the Wilton Course 3 it was the older course with the fondant clown cake and no fondant rose. When I started teaching I had to teach the rose, and since I had never done it I was unsure of what I was doing. Sure enough the first time I taught it I told them to use the middle size cutter. I don't remember if I read it wrong or just didn't pay attention. So we all did it work. After I was at home and practicing on it after the class I realized the mistake and corrected it the next time of class. While I am a WMI I am also human, and humans do make mistakes at times.
This is a new class and as instructors we are still learning our way through teaching it as well. It could have been an mistake on her part, or just one of those days where your mind just isn't working all the way. Or maybe she misread and has been practicing wrong.
If you happen to have her email address I would just send her an email. If not, you can call her or get to class a little earlier and ask her about it. I wouldn't wait until the middle of class to casually mention it.
