Hello! I had this recipe I used for Red Velvet and cannot find it anywhere!!!!! I think it was using a Red Velvet Cake mix and adding other ingredients to it....sourcream, etc. Does anyone have such a recipe. Prefer a good one made from a mix!
Thanks so much!

Good luck ![]()
Funny you should ask...I just made this yesterday and it turned out GREAT!! Very moist, and the cake itself wasn't too, too sweet!! This is the recipe I used and it will be my new RVC recipe! Hope you enjoy
DH Red Velvet Cake MIX
1 small box instant choc pudding
4 egg whites
3/4 C water
1/2 C oil
1 C sour cream
1 bottle red food color (liquid)
I recently had the red velvet cupcake at Claim Jumpers.
What is red velvet supposed to taste like? It tasted like plain cake that was colored red.
I had a DH red velvet mix so I made that tonight, straight from the box directions...hmm, it's pretty good! I want to doctor it up now, I think I'm going to use it in margie's incredible chocolate cake recipe with chocolate pudding, I guess? The red velvet mix is awfully red in and of itself. Will I need to add more red coloring?
This cake is sturdy, but moist! I have used it for a wedding cake, so it stacks well. I prefer the coconut garnish, my dad likes the pecans.

Ingredients:
1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks = 1/2 pound), room temp
½ cup Crisco
1 and ½ cups granulated white sugar
3 large eggs, room temp
1 envelope Dream Whip
1 and ½ cups buttermilk, room temp
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 ounce (1 tablespoon) red food color
2 and ½ cups cake flour (I use Swan's Down)
¼ cup cocoa powder (I use Hershey's)
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 tablespoon white vinegar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cream butter and shortening, then add sugar and beat until light and fluffy
Beat in eggs, one at a time
Beat in Dream Whip, buttermilk, vanilla extract and food coloring
Over wax paper, sift together flour, salt and cocoa
Add flour mixture slowly to the wet ingredient and beat to combine
In a small bowl, combine baking soda and vinegar, stirring until baking soda dissolves then add to batter and beat the batter on high for 3 minutes.
For an 8 or 9 inch round cake, divide between 3 prepared pans (I use Pam with Flour)
Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, check for doneness with toothpick
Cool for 10 minutes in pans then turn out on wire racks and cool completely before frosting
Ice with Cream Cheese Frosting or Flour Frosting (recipes below)
Garnish sides with either flake coconut or toasted chopped pecans

Cream Cheese Frosting
Ingredients:
2 sticks (1/2 pound) unsalted butter, room temp
16 ounces cream cheese, room temp
2 pounds 10X sugar, sifted
2 tablespoons heavy cream (double cream)
2 tablespoons Wilton meringue powder
DO NOT use light cream cheese, margarine, or shortening!
Cream butter and cheese until smooth.
Add meringue powder and blend
Add sugar 1 cup at a time and mix until thoroughly incorporated before adding next installment
Add cream 1 tablespoon at a time
Beat on high for 3 minutes
Yields approx 5-1/2 cups

Flour Frosting:
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Over medium heat, cook the flour and milk until thickened. Let cool. In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream together the butter, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Beat in the flour mixture.

an authentic red velvet cake would be reminiscient of a devil's food cake but is a ravishing red colour and has a light frosting that is a buttery vanilla flavour. Not to be confused with a cake that mascarades as a RVC wearing a nasty coat of cream cheese frosting
The RVC I made recently was absolutely delicious and I got wonderful comments on it. I made it with Blakescakes recipe using a DH RVC mix. I also iced it with my own recipe for nasty cream cheese icing. I'm not a Southerner so don't know ALL about RVC and what's traditional about it but I do know this was WONDERFUL and my family wants another one real soon.

hmm, it didn't taste chocolaty, but it did have a vanilla bean buttercream frosting that was very good, but very sweet...
