My niece is requesting this cake for her sweet sixteenth birthday coming up in a month, but I need to start ordering some supplies.

The only difference is she wants gold and silver stars and the bead border will be black and of course the wording will be different.

I am not quite sure how to get the shape of the cakes and what size the tiers might be. She wants it frosted in buttercream and then the stars will be fondant painted with some type of silver and gold dust. Also, what type of wire is best for the stars on top of the cake?

Any type of suggestions or advice are appreciated!!!!

start w/ layers as wide as you want the TOP of each tier.

then decide how much of a taper you want:
LOTS -- 4 inch difference top to bottom

or

Less -- 2 inch difference top to bottom

then cut cake boards....(see sketch)

so if top is 10 then w/ lots middle is 8 and bottom is 6 and with less top is 10 middle is 9 and bottom is 8.

stack and dowel as normal all the tiers -- which for this one tier example would be 10inch wide...

then using serrated knife, trim away the excess using the cake boards to guide you.

if you've ever watched this done on the Food TV cake challenges, the carving is done easiest by having the tier UPSIDE DOWN when carving -- easier to do the slant that way. could even make a cardstock/cardboard template to double check the slant is correct.

As for the wire - I usually use floral wire, as long as the item isn't too heavy.

I recently did a Tinkerbell cake calling for stars and instead of using wire, I just make chocolate star lollipops. It worked out great!

Just an idea for another option to consider icon_smile.gif

...so you'll definately need gold and silver luster dust to paint the stars. Doug has some excellent info on cutting the cakes...you look to be on your way!!! thumbs_up.gif

Doug, Thanks for the sketch. I always wondered how to get the tapered look and tend to be a bit of a visual person, so seeing it really helps. (Glad I was surfing the forum today.)

Gatorbear, good luck with your cake!

Doug is great! I also found here on CC a flower pot cake that is the same shape and might offer you some tips. http://www.cakecentral.com/article46-Step-By-Step-3D-Cake-Sculpting-Baby-in-a-Flower-Pot.html
