I have thinned mine out with lemon extract. I also have used thin royal icing to paint with if you want a "thicker" look. I like both of them.

i guess the vodka evaporates, like with luster dust?

any alcohol based thinner will evaporate faster than the water, plus water I think would make the fondant more "gummi".

Water will make the colors tacky to the touch for awhile. Vodka, or any other alcohol, will help the color to dry much faster. thumbs_up.gif

There are a lot of lovely painted cakes in the gallery. Have a look at 'sweetcakes' & 'gabywany', they have some lovely ideas & are most helpful if you PM them.

i use absinthe - it works really well and i like to think it's almost industrial strength alcohol content makes it very hygienic to use!

I'm doing a monster truck in a couple weeks (grave digger) and wanted to paint the design on the cake, it is very detailed, I was wondering if this would work on buttercream or is it too soft? Or would I get much better results if I covered the cake in MMF?
Thanks

Try lemon abstract if you don't want the alcohol in the house (clear vanilla or almond would probably work as well.

I have a small bottle of Everclear for my cake decorating. It gets a few laughs from my friends.

No howie,
The taste of alcohol evaporates like the liquid. There is no taste & it dries really fast.

i think you can use lemon extract? we don't have it here in new zealand so I can't tell you if it has alcohol in it, maybe someone else can confirm?

I painted MMF covered cookies this weekend (check my pictures) using food coloring thinned with just water. It worked OK, didn't soften the MMF too much, was able to stack and package same day.
