Is Anyone Else Really Upset About Artificial Sweeteners?

Forgive me if I am missing something
but what is the alternative? If you want fat-free, then it is loaded with sugar....if you want sugar-free, it has aspartame or fats.....if it is both then they have to use something to give it the sweetness or flavor, right? (or it ends up tasting like cardboard) If there is something out there that gives flavor/sweetness that isn't aspartame or Splenda, do tell!! ![]()
I bought the weight control oatmeal one time, it had the same amount of calories so I thought it was just extra protein or something (it did not have a splenda logo on the box). As soon as I took one bite I spit it out because I could taste the splenda in it. NASTY. Most people can't taste Splenda, but to me it's worse than nutrasweet or sacharin (Sp?). Anyway, I'm not against sweeteners per se (heck I drink diet coke), but I think things with artificial sweeteners should be better marked.
Most of the time I can taste it and hate it. I figure I am not diabetic, so I can have the good stuff. I can't even drink diet soda. I know a lot of people love it, but it's not for me.
yah, so i was at the store yesterday looking for flavored water, and everything that i found either had aspertame or splenda or some other form of artificial sweeteners, and it's really bugging me...
If you're looking for flavored waters that are sugar-sweetened, try looking in the kids' drinks area, usually near the boxed juices.
I think it is Crystal Geyser that has a flavored sparkling water with no sweeteners. Of course, if you are expecting a Kool-aid sweet drink, this isn't it. The water is flavored with natural fruit essences, which give a delicate flavor.
I like to just keep a jug of water in the fridge with sliced lemon or lime in it. No sugar, but quite yummy.

Artificial sweetners are really bad for your body when it comes to processing the chemicals. One of my co-workers would get bad headaches occasionally and her body would be sore and sometimes she was tired all the time. Her accupuncturist told her to stop drinking diet soda because of the artificial sweetners in it and her problems went away.
yuck! me too - I'm pretty turned off by artificial sweetners.
Did you look at LaCroix water - carbinated, but I'm not sure how/if they sweeten too much.
I've recently noticed how many yogurts are flavored with aftificial sweetners, and friut juice .. it's crazy.
I would just like them to put less sugar in things, not replace it with fake crap!
i have two friends who drink diet sodas and both have problems, they both are overweight(the artificial sweetner just makes you crave more)one has ms and the doc said he thinks it is caused by all the diet coke she drinks and its alot. my other friend had a small stroke in one of her eyes and can't see with that one, she gets headaches all the time, she has blood pressure problems. what really scares me is that is what her kids drink. when mine would go over there they would call and ask if they could have it and i said no. i don't use artifical sweetners and never will. my youngest daughter made a bet with two of her teachers that if they would quit drinking diet soda for a week they would feel better and if they did i would make them some of my choc chip cookies. she made them sign a contract and even had one of them have their wife sigh it. he did quit and isn't drinking it anymore. he said he feel sbetter.
When the days start getting longer (aka now!) I like to start buying lemons and limes again.
I just keep the lemons/limes cut up and on a plate with some crushed ice in the fridge. Whenever I open a bottle of water (like 8 times a day) I just squeeze a slice in it and drop it in the bottle.
There are some bottled waters (carbonated and uncarbonated) in the "healthy foods" section, and they're not sweetened. They just have the fruit essences in them. I LOVE THOSE! But they're pretty expensive...so I just get them as "treats."

They contribute to the cause of cancer also. Put flavoring in your water for flavored water. Also lemon or lime or orange is good.
I know I'm going to butcher the spelling but aspertame turn to fermaldihide at 98 degrees. And what is the human body temp----oh that's right, 98.6 This is not bull either!!! Also, margarine is only 1 molacule away from being plastic and you will increase you chances of cancer by over 50%.
what about spleand it is suppose to be made with sugar, or frutose it is antural sugar
I don't think enough people realise about how awful they are so there isn't pressure on the manufacturers to cut them out. People daftly think that 'sugar free' means it's somehow magically sweet through the addition of air or something. I eat no aspartame ever and it's very hard to avoid!

Not to mention that Lead is just one electron away from Gold, but that doesn't mean that we can convert it into gold. Although many have certianly tried.
The worst part about sweeteners are that they can cause you to gain weight more than you would have had you just had that glass of normal coke or that cake with "normal" sugar. Sugar in large quantities may be bad for you, but it IS more filling and more likely to suppress hunger than a substitute chemical sweetener. Artificial sweeteners though, they stimulate your taste buds and makes you hungry, but it does nothing to fill you up in the way sugar would and actually makes you hungrier, and more likely to binge on something bad.
The only sugar-substitute I'll use is Stevia, which is derived from a plant and has a ton of medicinal and beneficial properties to it, and is actually sweeter than sugar! My mother used to make a stevia and carob cake (carob is like chocolate) and it tasted really good (like chocolate cake) and was actually HEALTHY for you to eat!
The problem is that these things are far more expensive to produce, therefore they aren't used the way aspartame and saccharin and the like are.
Your best bet, therefore, if you want only "good sugar" in your drinks and you don't want to just drink water, is to buy either organic juice (Odwalla has a lot) or to make your own with a juicer!
I'll second the stevia. It's great in coffee/tea.
I've never heard of Stevia, where is that available?
Ive tried making diabetic cake with Splenda and although I have a couple customers that loved the pineapple poundcake, I found it has a horrible aftertaste...blech
I NEVER drink water, only soda and tea(I know thats not at all healthy but I suspect there are many others that do the same), I switched from real sugar to all diet 0 cal. drinks 5 years ago and have lost 27 lbs. and kept it off. I dont agree that sugar substitutes make you gain...I think its just another excuse people use to justify overeating.
