I was wondering if I could get some help with a cake I am making today. It is a einstein cake, I am going to put the turtle from Neptune on it. I was thinking of piping the turtle on directley to the cake, so my question is has anyone done that and been able to smooth it, I am using the crusting buttercream and thought once it sets i could use a viva paper towel and lightly smooth with my hand. What do you think or any good pointers/suggestions? Thanks.
Are you familiar with a frozen buttercream transfer? I personally would do that instead of piping on a cake. But you could probably smooth it a bit with crusting buttercream by gently tapping it down.
Yes I have done a FBCT before, but I was trying to stay away from that because I didn't want to have to pipe around the turtle because of the height difference when you place it on the cake. I don't want it to look sloppy though so I will do that if someone has tried piping right on and it doesn't work well, it was justa thought and was wondering if it would work.
I have seen a couple of cake pictures recently where the person did use thinned icing and just piped it in on the cake and they looked wonderful. I was surprised that it could be done this way. I'm going to look back through the gallery and see if I can find one. It was less than a week ago that I saw the last one.
I'm a newbie so I'm not sure if this is the right technique, but I trace a coloring book picture with thinned BC onto wax paper & then gently press onto the cake. You can then fill in the picture with your desired colors. I use a decorators brush & water to smooth out. Good luck! (My Cinderella cake is an example.)
In Wilton We were taught to transfer picturesw to a cake by putting a sheet of wax paper over the picture and outlining with clear piping gel. Then put the wax paper on the cake and gently press it so some piping gel is left on the cake. It gives you the lines to work with and you can pipe right over it and fill in where needed.
I have used piping gel to trace designs from a coloring book page, or a page I printed from the computer and I love how it turns out. It is so easy. All you have to do is trace your design onto wax paper using the piping gel, and then carefully flip it over onto your iced cake, press it down slightly, and your image is now on the cake. Now all you have to do is use buttercream to fill it in. It is like coloring on cake!!! I do not have my pictures on here because I have not figured out how to put them on yet, but the cakes really look great using this method. I know what you mean about the FBCT, I do not like that it comes out raised either. This method avoids that! Good Luck
I've used colored sugar glaze in a bottle to fill for my spiderman ccc (in my picts) that was super easy and it "dries" faster than royal. Just add a little water to 10x sugar and color (just enough to make it flow) Now it doesn't dry hard like royal, but it crusts enough to pipe over if you have details to add (in my case all the spiderwebbing). Quicker than FBCT, not as thick, looks better than filling in with stars and has a nice smooth look to it with no extra handling involved. HTH~

Rosiecakes - I LOVE the sugar glaze idea. Smoothing out with a brush takes so long for me. I can't wait to try your technique!
Oh i don't take credit for this, i actually first saw colored sugar glaze used when my children were in a playgroup as toddlers and one of the mothers made sugar cookies with various colors of glaze for the kids to "paint" the cookies. I thought it was such an awesome idea because it covered art and snack for the day with one project.
darby your cakes look good, love the princesses!

Hey Darby!
I looked at your Cinderella cake and she is great! You did a very nice job on her to say the least. I am going to be trying the method you used in the near future and hope mine comes out as nice as yours did.
I would have left you a comment on the cake but you do not have that feature turned on for viewers to do so. To turn the feature on click on "my forum info" on the left side of any page. Scroll down your profile page until you see the feature that allows people to leave comments on your photos and turn it on.
This is if you want people to be able to leave comments on your work. If you do not wish to receive comments then leave it turned off.
you might want to tint the piping gel with a color first. I tint mine black so you can see it on the iced cake. I just pipe over it with black buttercream after and it looks great. You could really tint it with any color, you just want it to stand out against the white icing. you will love this!!!

Wow, I've never heard of this technique. How about the flavor, how does it taste?

Like suga'...well actually its kinda thin on top my buttercream so it mostly taste like the buttercream though i dont see why you couldnt add flavoring if you wanted.
That is soo cute!! Wonderful job on the cake!! I am glad we could help. I am not sure about the piping gel not sticking. I haven't had that trouble before.
