What kind/size of cake pan do you use for the little smash cakes that you make to go with a 1 year old's birthday cake?

Thanks

I used to do 2 layer 6" but last week I did a 4" double layer and it was so cute! I think if you want room to write out Happy Birthday, etc. then 6" but otherwise, I prefer 4" because its not too much cake.

I made one last week using the inner "pot" from my son's stanless steel MESS KIT (he's a scout) because i was too lazy to dig in my pan cabinet for little pans that always get shoved to the back from lack of use. Anyway, it worked out great was about 5 inches, and since i don't charge for the smash cake i dont offer options i just make whatever i have on hand to coordinate with the main cake.

I have just used a one layer 6"-- that allows me to write their name pretty large. Not so good at the small writing yet. : )

I prefer a 3" or 4" double layer. I know that most of the cake doesnt' get eatten so a small one I can decorate to match the cake easily and I like the small ones, they are just so cute.

I make 4" thick, single layer smash cakes as a rule, but, last week I made one for a 90 year old lady and did a 5 1/2 inch. to match her big cake. Her daughter said she loved it!

3 inches seems small but what i used for the top of my "blues clues" cake back in '99 was CLEANED OUT tuna fish cans! they made the most adorable little cakes and i'm sure if you wanted you could make a lil tuna smash cake although if you call it that it may make someone sick! lol

(blues clues cake on website, older cake, not posted on CC)

How do you guys make batter for the smash cake? Or do you guys just take a little batter from the larger cake and put it in the pan?

I provide a free smash cake with all 1st birthday cake orders. My smash cakes are just a single layer 4" or 5" round cake with colors that match the main cake. I usually make smash cakes when I have leftover batter and keep them in the freezer.
