Ok, I am posting a picture of a cake that I just did, let me give you a little bit of info on me...this is the 8th cake that I have ever made, I have never taken any classes in cake decorating, this particular cake was my first attempt at using Luster Dusts, and only the my fourth attempt at using fondant, I made the MMF. And on top of all of that I have three little girls running around trying to "help" me decorate icon_eek.gif Ages 3 1/2, 1 1/2 and 8 weeks. Sooo with all of that being said, I have a serious passion for this, and I would like to do it for a living someday...looking at what I have done so far (some of my cakes are not posted) do you think I have a future in this? PLEASE BE HONEST!!! The last thing I need is false hope!!! I just look at others' cakes on this site and I think...WOW... I am out of my league, you know? Thanks for all of the advice/critism you can give to me!!!

i like it. I think the boobs could be a little more in proportion and the dress maybe could not extend past the board but end with the squared edge? Otherwise i think it looks really good. The luster dust is pretty cool.

I agree w/ the comments made so far and would suggest not using tin foil as your board covering.

I think you are doing well, keep in mind I am also new, and for every cake that I think I have done well on, I make 5 more that just make me shake my head....I am so not consistent!

If you could find time for a few classes I think they are worth it (if nothing else it keeps you practicing) but this website has taught me a lot too.....I never would have tried a FBCT or ganache or MMF if not for this site!!!!

I think if you are motivated to do something, you can do it, personally I never want to make cakes for a living (the clean up drives me nuts) I just want to be able to make my friends and family happy with my creations.....so just keep practicing and who knows!

If you're doing this well in the beginning stages, I can only imagine how much better you will get if this is your true heart's desire. thumbs_up.gif

Good job with not taking any classes. IMOA I think you need a larger base cake to put the pregnant one on. Also if you're looking for something cheaper to cover the cake board - freezer paper works well. Working with the fondant takes experience, which I currently don't have, but yours looked fine. Keep practicing and if you can get to classes of some type it would be a good experience.

I think your off to a great start. I've taken the Wilton classes and they were great for learning the basics. I've learned more advanced stuff through trial and error and this site. Yep luster dust can be one of your best friends as well as the clear glitter dust. Love Love Love the stuff. Looking forward to seeing more from you. If you look through the galleries randomly you can see how people progress with time. Look at my first stuff, prime example. You are doing a FANTASTIC job and it's incredible to see how with each cake you get faster and better. Keep it up.

The biggest thing I noticed is the board. So many people overlook the board the cake is sitting on! To make a nice presentation you have to start with a good board. You don't have to get fancy. It can just be freezer paper or the wilton silver foil, but it will make a big difference. You want the board to look nice and neat so that the cake will stand out, not the board.

You're off to a great start. Have fun at your classes! thumbs_up.gif

You're doing very well! Your skills are good for a beginner, and they will easily advance, as long as you've got enthusiasm and the willigness to practice, practice, practice.

I agree with a couple of other comments....I'd make the pregnant lady smaller in proportion to the sheet cake base so the dress can drape over her tummy and not just end. I thought her boobs were fine. They do get big and juicy when pregnant, don't they? icon_smile.gif

The aluminum foil on the base just jumped out at me. Finding a good, tidy way to cover your boards should be a priority. I also like to see boards trimmed fairly close to the size of the cake...no more than a couple of inches beyond the border...closer if you can manage it.

But, the cakes themselves show a lot of promise. Good start!
