It's shiney when wet, but dries to a matte finish... I make mine according to the Wilton recipe inside their can of meringue powder... I think it's 3 Tablespoons of meringue to 1 pound of confectioner's sugar ...
DRy royal icing under a reading lamp or in a very very low oven with door open to get a gloss finish
pretty much the same because it's made with conf. sugar as well. I may be putting an age on myself
- but do you remember the little dots of candy that were on a long strip of white paper - there were usually 3 rows of these little dots and you would tear them off the paper and eat them? They taste like them - pure sugar.
And eat them even with the paper that had stuck to the candy as well. Ah, the good old days.
I found a candy store in NYC that was like stepping through a time warp. Do you remember the little cloth bags filled with bubble gum pieces that looked like gold nuggets? And candy cigarettes? They had it all. What a great store.
that is the one thing I love about ny!! you can find anything in the world there!!
You can still get the paper dot candy! They have them in all the gas stations around here. One of my daughters was paper dot candy for halloween! Yum!
I have used the color flow product and did not get a shiny finish. I think I'll try MissBaritone's trick.
edited to add for the candy nostalgia: And how about B.B. Bats, maryjanes, squirrels, and those wax pop bottles filled with sugary fruit flavored syrup? Do you remember when it was penny candy because it was only a penny a piece? We had a local candy shoop a few years ago and it was $.50 - $1.00 per piece. Now that's inflation!
I LOVED THOSE WAX LIPS!!!!! After we wore them so much that that little piece you used to bite to keep them in your mouth broke off - then we'd chew the wax like gum for a couple minutes and then spit it out. Way too much fun. I wish kids these days could be amused with such simple things.
