Just curious- what would you charge for a 3 tier, stacked construction wedding cake? All chocolate, covered in white fondant with green ribbon trim and dots? Bride is providing the flowers for the cake topper- should serve about 175... I am planning on 16, 12 and 8 rounds- and am throwing in her 1st anniversary cake on the side (not part of the actual tiered cake to be served). I thought it was a fairly simple cake- so I told her $200 which she was more than happy with. Too much, too little? Just wondering for next time...

Too little...a little over a dollar per serving. My fondant covered cakes start at $3.50 per serving. Can I tell you I spent over $1000 for my wedding cake...nothing great about...no fondant, simple design, and my florist brought the flowers. Now, that I know so much about cake, I finally get it!

My price would be $575.00.
It may be a simple design, but it's going to cost you at least $100 in ingredients (estimating here), and a lot of time.
Please don't shortchange yourself in order to get a sale, even if it is for someone you know.

Way too little! I charge $4 per serving for fondant, so my price would be $700!

Waaaaay tooooo little. I'm sure she was very happy with that price. I use to charge waaaaaa toooooo little. Now I charge waay too little icon_biggrin.gificon_sad.gif .

My wedding cake was $300 and my mom cried. I still have that devastating scene in my head. It makes it hard for me to charge more. But the longer I have been doing this, the more I realize how I'm hurting myself and my family. It's not fair to them to spend at least 3 days working on a wedding cake and taking time away from them to make a few bucks.

So is this your first time making a wedding cake? That's okay if it is. You'll know better next time icon_wink.gif .

yep- it sure is~ for a sister of a friend

I get a lot of orders for character and bday cakes- but usually shy away from wedding cakes. I have done a 3 tier anniversary cake (see my photos) without much problem- but am reluctant to take on wedding cakes. I have this awful fear of ruining someone's wedding by ruining their cake. (transportation is probably the biggest fear). Not to mention I am in NY and their health laws are ridiculously strict- and I am not licensed...

A local chocolate shop owner told me she would much rather make wedding cakes than novelty cakes. At that time I had never made a wedding cake and I thought she was crazy. Now that I have made them, I agree with her.

My DH helps me transport wedding cakes and carries them in for me. That relieves me from a lot of pressure.
