I have a $125 gift card to Barnes and Noble from the students in my class. I was looking at the store and they have very few books in stock. It is so hard to tell the good books online. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was looking at Toba Garrett but the book was pricey to buy without ever seeing it in real life. I am taking a class w/ Margret Braun in May but do not know anything about the book. I was also thinking about the Nicholas Lodge books? Any reviews or recommendations?
When I go to B & N, if they don't have the book I have them order it for me so I can look at it before I buy it. Many books are not what they are cracked up to be. I was just looking at Margaret Braun's "Cakewalk" book the other day and decided against it, although I have heard great things about it, it wasn't for me. Personally I love all Toba's books and the International School of Sugarcraft series (three books), especially book 3.
I love Toba's Professional Cake Decorating book - it really breaks things down step-by-step and has a lot of awesome techniques. There's a website called www.ecookbooks.com that has it for about $42 with free shipping so you might be better off ordering it on your own there if you want it to save $$$. I agree that the Intl. School of Sugarcraft books are also great "technique" books. Do you have a list of books you'd like to see? Check your local library and search the system to see if any of the libraries in your area have a copy that you can look at before buying. I did that at my library and they had more than I thought they would. If it's not at your branch, they'll usually do an inter-branch exchange and get it from another branch for you.
If you like scratch baking, I can't say enough good things about "The Cake Bible". And for chocolate transfers, "The Whimsical Bakehouse" will give you tons of ideas as well as clearly walk you through the technique. They also have some good recipes (I love their House Buttercream and their Freckled Mocha Cake).
It depends on what you're looking for - technique books, idea and inspiration books, or recipe books?
Whenever I have free time, I go to the book store and sit and look through EVERY book. I now have a list of "must have" books that I want. Then, when I have the money, I get to get one! Lucky you, you could actually get a couple of them at once! Choose wisely!
