Here is my latest cake. I only had to make 3 roses prior to these to get them to look decent. The cake is a german chocolate with cake mix extender, coconut pecan filling, and Toba Garrett's chocolate buttercream. I would like to try the starburst roses next to get the color. These are so much easier than the buttercream ones.

PLEASE...............give me a plate and fork. You have made my craving for chocolate even worse and it's so early in the morning....................

Love the cake and love the roses. I have never tried to make them but you make it look tempting to learn.

Ok this is new to me, you have me curious. So just how do you use these? Do you soften them up? What about the star burst? Thanks thumbs_up.gif

Nikki, your roses are divine.

Please let me make a suggestion to you regarding the Starbursts.

They are harder than Tootsie Rolls, so you might want to microwave them at 5 second bursts, until they are soft enough to handle, but not so hot they burn your hands. This also works for Tootsie Rolls that are slightly on the old side, and are therefore harder than normal.

Caramels make great roses, too, but they are the opposite - they soften more easily than the other two candies listed above, so you might have to put the flower down and let it cool off for a minute or two during work.

Coincidentally, I already planned to use a combination of TR and C roses on a birthday cake I am doing this weekend for my son-in-law. German chocolate is his favorite cake, and I thought the roses would make a great addition.

A small bag (about $1) can make 6-10 roses, from what I've found. Definantly buy fresh as the old ones don't work as nice.

You can also make these on suckers! Dum-Dums take 2-3, and BlowPops 4-6 but those make HUGE roses.

And a big THANK YOU! I was thinking about how to go about the red rose for my Sleeping Beauty cake, and Starbursts would be perfect. Doncha hate it when you know something and dont remember to use it?

I made them for a cake I made for a christmas party at work, they are much like making roses with fondant they just get soft from the warmth of your hands, so you do have to stop for awhile to let them harden up a bit.

WOW, thanks. I haven't done the BC or RI roses much at all and they don't look good when I do do them. icon_redface.gif

These were so easy. I put the TR in the microwave for about 5 sec, cut them lengthwise, then cut 4-5 width. This gives you 8-10 small pieces. I used a Hershey's kiss as by cone. Flatten one of the pieces, I just used my thump and finger, to wrap around the kiss for the center. Then flatten and attach the row of 3 petals, then the row of 5 petals. For my largest rose I added a row of 7.

It does get sticky, so I kept a wet paper towel next to me to wipe off my fingers every so often and I noticed the if my petals were to thin they drooped. HTH

How exactly do you get them to work? Just play with them till they look right or do you cut shapes?

Also, if tootsie rolls and starburts work, I would assume that the flavored tootsie tolls like the vanilla and other flavors maybe someone knows what i'm talking about. Plus i now starburts don't come in white so that might be a way to get them. Just thoughts.

Those are very beautiful, makes me want to go get some candy and try it! :]
