I've had a lot of trouble getting a good source for irridescent luster dusts in Canada in the past few years as it has been unapproved for sale here. (I'm sure that is just for edible use...but stores often don't sell it now anyway.) icon_mad.gif

I'll buy from the US...no problem. But what brands are you using? icon_confused.gif

What I want is the amazingly shiny gold & silver that I see on these cakes on C.C. It's almost mirror quality sometimes! Are you just using a LOT...or does it just work that way??

Help!

Hi Antonia74!

I bought some dust from Klara Johnsons in Cambridge. http://www.klarajohnsons.com/. I bought the stuff she calls Snowflake dust. It's super sparkly! She might carry the gold and silver dusts you are looking for. Give them a call. 1-519-624-1187.

HTH!

Have look at http://www.chefrubber.com/

The luster dusts are called "decor powder". They have also sell them in 50g. I worked once with them and really liked the shimmering of it.

You may also want to check out sugarcraft.com. They have a large selection of dusts. I have had great results with the metallic silver dust. They also sell the metallic gold as well as the real gold dust. Not sure exactly what they call the real gold dust, but it is in the same section.

Well Creative Cutters is in Ontario...but McCall's Supply told me 2 years ago lustres are being taken off the shelves in Canada.

That store and their misinformation drive me nuts!!?? icon_mad.gif

I think the super shiny stuff you want is gold and silver highlighter

Gold and silver highlighter are super metallic dusts that look like shiny gold and silver and are packaged the same as luster dusts. I have no idea what they are made of (luster dust for that matter either)

The highlighters are labeled "for use on non-edible items" where luster dusts are labeled non-toxic. highlighters offer much more metallic image than luster dusts do.

when you all use gold dusts what type do you use? and what type of sheen or whatever does it provide? Old gold, super gold or what?

Have you tried golda's kitchen? www.goldaskitchen.com

They are located close to me in Mississauga, and the online prices are all in Canadian dollars (with the option of changing over to U.S. dollars)

They defintely have lustre dust.

Yes, I order from Golda's regularly. They are amazing!!

But I've found the shine from their lustre dusts kind of weak...not this "mirror shine" I see in cake photos on this site? icon_confused.gif

This is the look you want correct? If so this is the stuff labelled do not eat. I have heard that it is mostly the gold or silver with some other alloys. So its one of those things that should be peeled off before eating if placed on fondant.

23k gold powder can be eaten like gold leaf. It can be found but it ain't cheap. about 48.00 per g.

You wouldn't use extacts 23k gold powder especially lemon, because the acidity will turn the gold off color. Use straight alcohol like vodka.
