I'm going to be starting a cake class at my local bakery the middle of March. Do you think this should be better than taking the wilton class at Micheals's. I'm thinking I will learn more at the bakery, it is a 6 week class every Tuesday for 2 hours. Hope to hear anyone's input.
Thank you, Andrea

I'm sure you will benefit from this class. Your instructor should be very knowledgable, so that alone should be worth the money. Though you don't say how much it is costing you, if the cost is alot more then the wilton class you might want to start with the cheaper class just to see if you want to persue this craft more.

I am currently taking the Wilton Course classes, starting Course 2 next Monday, and I had never decorated a cake in my life until Course 1. You can look at my photos and be your own judge for this one person. The cost was only 25.00 plus a few additional supplies and it was for 2 hours every Monday for 4 weeks, making for 8 hours of classroom time. I feel like I am learning a lot in Wilton and highly recommend them to anyone wanting to learn to decorate cakes and cookies. By the time I complete all courses I will be knowledgeable in fondant and gumpaste too. Your bakery classes should teach you all of this too and if you have a really good instructor, maybe more. It would be hard to think you would be wasting your time either way you choose.
Have fun and welcome to CC! icon_smile.gif

Please post and let us know how it is going.

I took the Wilton Course 1 in a weekend. Well, we pretty much did it all in one day (Saturday). I'm ready for the next course.

Enjoy your class. I'm sure you'll love it!

I would say it depends on the bakery. Some bakeries rush through their decorations because they pump out cakes so quickly and use quick techniques to decorate. I'd eventually check out the Wilton courses if you feel the bakery's class is not as detailed as you'd like.

My Wilton teacher also teaches at a fancy cake store nearby. The classes are 5times as much as the Wilton classes at Michael's. We were just asking her the difference and she said there is really no difference. You learn all the same things. She is great and always will teach us extras with each class. I might do a Michael's class first since it is so cheap. Then will have some basic knowledge which makes it easier to judge the classes, techniques, etc. Good luck!
