I have a friend that wants a cake covered in coarse sugar. Where do I find this kind of sugar? Also, how would you go about applying that to the buttercream icing to get an even look?
It's a very simple cake. Only iced in butter cream and then covered with the coarse sugar. It has no borders or other decor.
Please help!
Thank you.
It depends what look she's going for. I can't imagine the crunch!! I love coarse sanding sugar, because it's almost like pretty crystals, but I believe (and I'm sure somebody will be able to tell you for certain) that you can find coarse sugar right alongside the raw sugar in the grocery store.
What a pretty cake that will be! I've only found coarse sugar at my cake supplier. BUT, I live in a somewhat rural area.
I've never put it on a cake, BUT, have seen it applied to fondant cakes. I think it would be EASIER to do on buttercream. Just press into the sides of the cake. I would THINK! But, that is just in MY opinion!
Good Luck!

I've used the clear, white looking type of sparkle sugar Wilton makes. I didn't crush mine and used it in the larger more coarse verison it comes in .. it was really pretty on the cake too .... I have no idea how it taste but that's what the bride wanted. I told her in possibly would make a crunch but she didn't care... she wanted it, she got it ![]()

Country Kitchen has coarse sugar crystal on many colors. Actually, I love the crunch of these on frosted cookies- I just sprinkle a bit on , not a solid coating. I've never tried them on a cake. I just sprinkle them on while the frosting is fresh and soft.
