Maybe a simple question, but what exactly does crumb coat mean? What purpose does it serve? Yes, it's true, I really don't know. Remember, I'm a Newbie! Be nice ![]()
Hey Angela,
Welcome aboard.
A crumb coat is basically just a first layer of icing, usually very thin. You let it crust over and then put a second layer of icing over it. The 2nd layer is the one you smooth (it's the top one). The crumb coat helps to keep the crumbs from getting into your top layer of icing.
If you put the icing on pretty thick or if you use the decorator tip, you don't need to do a crumb coat at all.
HTH,
Christine
or, you can be like me and get crumbs in your final coat of frosting after putting on a crumb coat anyway.
sigh, speckled cake anyone??

I don't think you'll have to worry about that here!! Everyone is so nice and willing to help. I read a thread yesterday about this same thing and it had some interesting suggestions that I will try for this weekend. I'm trying to find the link. If I do I will post it for you!! Welcome to CC! Like I've said before...get ready to lose some sleep!! ![]()
